I have a Hercules TI500.
Just wondering how much better a TI4200 would be over the TI500. They're meant to be kinda similar in performance aren't they??

No not really. You should read some reviews (Toms had a really nice one not so long ago) but usually you'll see about a 30% or more increase with a ti4200. Especially when teamed up with a beefy CPU.
I would suggest anyone already running Geforce3 Ti500 speeds shouldn't bother with an upgrade unless you go for the Ti4600 or Radeon 9700. Overclocking both the Ti500 and the Ti4200 the speed difference isn't really worth the price of a new video card. I am in the same boat as you, very tempted by the low price of the Ti4200. But I have to remind myself that all my games run plenty fast, and if I shell out money for a new card I want to be blown away, not just a little faster.
The Ti4200 will give you much faster gaming results. If you are seriously thinking about getting a new card, I would also recommend the Ti4600 or the Radeon 9700. Good luck. ;)
add the 9500 pro and throw the 4600 out of the recommendation list if you can wait a week or so before getting the new card.
Or....why not get the Albatron Ti 4200P Turbo and overclock to 4600 speeds? :D
If you can get in on Best Buy's $89 GeForce4 Ti4200 deal then I would grab that and then sell your GF3 Ti500. You will almost break even.
You could actually make some money. AFAIK GF3 ti500's are still selling for over $100, especially if you got some good software and bundle with it. I think asking $100 isn't too much for a Ti500. ;):DQuote:

Thanks for the great advice guys!
It's a difficult one. I was hoping the TI500 would last out until the NV30 is available. But things usually take an extra month to appear on the shelves here in Perth, Australia. At the moment the ole TI500 is still going very well and I'm not too concerned. But I know that Unreal 2 is going test the card severely. UT2003 already brings my framerates dangerously low in a FEW places. But I view that as the ageing signs beginning. The trouble is that a lot of computer businesses shut down over Christmas and a good chunk of January here In Perth. I don't wanna get stuck over that period.
I wouldnt sweat it. UT2 is a CPU hog as are most other new games ive played. My 32MB ultra still does the job fine but i need more CPU power for all the AI in games like UT2 with 16 bots, BF1942 with 400% unit count and mafia etc. Another 32MB of video memory would help too but I just lower the texture detail and its still fine.
If i had a ti500 i wouldnt be upgrading that at least until NV30 comes at a reasonable price. Or if i bought myself a 21" monitor.
In 1024-32 im still happy with my card.
I think you would get a much better overall performance boost with a bigger CPU. Dont forget recent benchmarks are performed on 2.5Ghz+ CPU's.
Please, for all that is good and sane in the universe, do not purchase any of the GF4 line when you've got a ti500.

While this review may be old, I think it's fair to say that the GF3 and 4 series should benefit about the same amount from driver updates.
I guess I'll just let you look at the numbers and decide for yourself, but whoever said you could expect ~30% more from a 4200...well...that was pure bull plop.
I guess if you could sell your ti500 for a good bit of money and only pay ~$10 more for your 4200 it'd make some sense, but just to drop that much money on any of the gf4 line would be ridiculuous...and were I a friend of yours, I'd be sure to ridicule you plenty :).
If I were to upgrade right now from a Ti500, there would be 2 choices:
Radeon 9700
Radeon 9700 pro
That's it. Any less and it's a waste of money. If you can wait a bit, GF FX will probably be worth the upgrade.
Thank You!
Well it's good to see that you guys are all quite sane. I too would not consider anything in the geforce 4 line at the moment unless I can't play a game the way I like it (FULL DETAIL), or my TI500 blows up. At the moment I'm running a Thoroughbred 2200+ (A) Which is the the highest I can go with my EPOX 8KHA+. The Thouroughbred B will not work on the board (So Epox Says!).
What I'm worried about is if I find I need to bridge the gap for a few short months until the Geforce FX (NV30) hits here in Perth Australia, which WILL BE one to two months after it's out in the US. The Only game I can see causing this to happen at the moment is Unreal 2. DooM III I suppose too if the NV30 takes forever to come out.
I know I could gain performance in other areas but my ageing Hardware is throttled as far as it's gonna go. Besides I'm just waiting for the Nforce2 VS KT400A war winner to choose a new mobo. All I'd need is a stopgap solution to tide me over. So that'd be like TI4400 kinda stuff right, from the bargain bin If I could help it. OR do you guys think the TI500 will hold out until the NV30 hits?
