Does anyone else here have experience with the Academic version of Windows XP Pro. I have it and the funny thing I've noticed is that it won't boot into Windows unless the Windows XP pro CD is in the cd rom drive. So does anyone else have the academic version? Is this the reason why I'm forced to have the CD every time I want to boot up my computer? Or is that problem unrelated?

I have the academic version and I definitely don't have to keep the cd in just to boot into windows. You can probably get around that problem by using virtual cd or something similar.
I also have academic version and it works fine w/0 needing the CD inserted. Don't remember that I did anything special, just "followed the yellow brick road" and took mostly defaults during install.

alright u guys might think i am kidding, i am pretty sure u WILL assume i am bsing abt it, been using windows since 3.1 and i have very good relation with microsoft's tech and sales reps for diff provinces (canada) but REALLY i didnt know there was a academic version of xp..
anyways its good to know that been a decade since i left school, is it something MS offers u guys at lower prices coz u r at school!??!?
XP Pro & Office 2002 w/Frontpage 2002 were only $35 each at my school. Not a bad deal. Plus, the academic version of XP Pro doesn't need activation, it's pretty much a corporate edition. Sweet deal.Quote:

I'm not sure how they can sell it for so cheap. The academic version of Windows XP Pro Upgrade at my school is $100. So basically I was able to save $100 (it's normally $200). I don't understand why mine won't boot without the CD. You'd think it'd save that to the ROM. Any ideas or suggestions on how I can fix this problem? ThanksQuote:

This is for a variety of reasons. One is that MS does give discounts to students. However, student licenses do not allow commercial use of the software. For instance, I couldn't buy a student license for Visual Studio and, upon graduation, develop a program and attempt to sell it (legally at least). The really cheap student versions are often because the university owns the license and doesn't actually sell you the software, but rather a fee to use it while you are there. Although it will probably never be enforced, you aren't legally allowed to use it after you graduate. The difference is rarely in the software itself, but in the license and rights you have to use the software. Read your EULA real close sometime and you can see the differences.Quote:

Some schools license MS software really cheap. AFIK U of Texas charges $10 per title.
I got my copy of WinXP Pro and Office XP Pro for 10 bucks each. I dont have to keep the CD in the drive and I did have to activate my copy of both. It says on my CD's "Unlicensed Software-Illegal without separate lincense from Microsoft", I had to sign a Student EULA. I dont remember exactly what it said, I was just happy I got the software.

Ok, I need to know how to fix the booting up problem. If you don't recall, my problem is: Windows XP Pro won't boot up unless the CD is there. It has nothing to do with it being academic version because the only thing that makes it academic is the fact that they slapped a sticker on the outer box and a few laws I have to obey. Nothing should be different about the OS itself. And you guys said yourself that your academic version of Windows XP Pro loads up fine without having to have the CD. I don't understand why it's not loading up.
When it boots up is says "Verifying DMI Pool.... " then it checks it and says "Error please boot from CD"
Shouldn't it just save to the ROM? Can anybody help me with this problem?
If you put the CD in the drive does it boot up normally? Or does the setup program automatically run? Try repairing the installtion, by booting from the CD and running a repair installation.
I dont really know what is wrong.

It sounds like perhaps you overwrite your MBR because you no longer have the NT loader. Running the repair should fix it.

that was from UT, also there is the academic pricing that almost every school has, in the library there were banners with the academic pricing and some feet away the UT banners for $8
