Doom III testing

Welppers I decided to test my system out, and install Doom III.
First of all let me say this, I have NEVER seen graphics like are in this game. Downright scary. One of the monsters made me pee pee. The gameplay, while buggy still(hey...its Alpha), is very playable. And oh the lighting....good lord man. Anyways on to the stuff. I deleted the doomcfg file, and let it rebuild. Changed the resolution to 1024x768, and ran it. The max framerate I saw was 63fps. That was running down a relatively dark hallway. The minimum I saw was 13fps. This was done with the rig in my sig. However I should note I did NOT have my vid card overclocked, nor my opengl setting tweaked. Im sure with some playing around, as well as installing the various patches, my fps would show a nice increase. This game is going to be a monster. :)

evolutionary... not revolutionary -_-
and yeah, i know it's an alpha, but it doesnt look that much better than quake3 with increadibly awesome lighting algorithms.
i dont have high hopes for this game. doom1-2 and quake were pretty cool, when they came out, but through all of ids games, the graphics change, but the gameplay doesnt. it gets boring after a while. i found the doom alpha to be annoying because you move so slowly. i know that's so it can be more realistic, and add to the survival horror atmosphere, but i personally dont find it fun moving at 10 ft/min.
now give me some jedi knight 3 action with the doom3 engine and it's on :D

i did find it to run decent on my ti4200 though. i'm impressed. initially i thought it would run like 5 fps.

You do know you can run in Doom 3 right? Still, I agree you do move fairly slow. However, Doom 3 is not that type of "hardcore, twitch shooter" so I don't see movement speed as a problem.

i guess when you've been playing cs and ut so long, it's hard to slow down...

I think we can't really judge this game at all until we see at least a test "DEMO". We are talking "alpha", which is before "beta". Alpha is EARLY stages while "beta" usually is a fairly decent idea of what the game is going to be like. But only when you see a playable demo is when I feel you can make the decision whether it sucks/rocks/is worth buying/etc. ID was pissed off enough when the alpha was leaked...it's like Piccasso making a rough layout for a painting, and then someone steals it and the world sees it and passes judgement. Not the best analogy but I'd feel violated if I was ID.

picasso was over-rated, and i thought i stressed that i realize it's an alpha, and in the end will probably look and play better. but that alpha was pretty far along. look at the leaked unreal2/warfare alpha engine. it wasn't that far off from ut2k3 in the visual or manuverability department. (yeah, i know it's a weak statement cause it's like apples and oranges, but you see where i'm coming from right? ;) )
anyways, i probably am just a judgemental doodeehead, but i just dont hold stock in id's "fun factor" anymore...

p.s. while i'm ragging on id, from all the tech demos THEY showed off of the game and the alpha, it looks NOTHING like a sequal to doom. where's all the imps, beholders, cyberminotaurs, and cyberarachnidbrainthingies?
seems like they're just using the name to fuel the marketing monster...
but i guess we'll just have to wait and see -_-

HA ha.

IMHO it's going to be used more as a technology demo to impress people not familiar with PC technology. I found it dull.. for me it's all about online team-based gaming these days.. :D

I'd sure like to see what the mod community can come up with though...

Yah, I feel the same way. I just liked the eye candy. I usually dont buy single player games, as they usually bore me. Now when D3 goes live, and has a multiplayer mode....Thats a whole differnet story. :)

Hehe, i tried it on our school FlashMX workstations, got 5 fps peak :D

funny thing Splinter Cell enviroments look just as good. The shadows are hella good and just as good as doom 3. Envirmomrents look about the same. the main thing the Doom 3 engine is it just has more possibiltys and better poly pushing. I think It will be a Demo of upcomming games. and I love BF1942, but we need VOICE CHAT. hard to act as a team.

TOTALLY AGREED!!! This game would be SOO much better with voiced chat. By the timeyou hit one of the F keys to respond to someone, your dead.

Yeah, the game really needs integrated voicechat like Counter-strike has done. Roger Wilco and other programs = great, but you need everyone using the same medium so it's easy, intuitive, and accessible.

BTW guys, new map came out for BF1942, it's called Coral Sea and it's map with 24 planes on it (on each team? Not sure), mostly a dogfight map (cool). Anyhow, www.3dgamers.com has it for download.
