i actually have a friend looking for a P3 Xeon w/ 512k cache
remember to get procs with the same stepping as the ones you have. may be difficult for an old processor
Why is it important for the stepping to be the same? I ask cause if someone were to build a new intel or amd comp, wopuld different stepping give bad results? Like, lets say 2 P4 with 533 fsb or 2 Athlon XP 1600.
yeah i never heard that either about how they have to be the same stepping. also do they need to have the same amount of cache. because the 512kb ones cost only like 60-70 when the 1mb cost around 150-230.
if i remember correctly. it nots a big deal if you mix diff cache cpus but its not reccommended, check what you have and get one like it. stepping is not important, just revision to the core, nothing that'll make the computer any worse. it's like buying a new cd player and buying an identicle model say a year later, the newer one is revised for some reason or another, nothing big.
Intel Link
At the very bottom.
the link is down. also if i got 2 more processors say of the the same cache size and same stepping whould i have to install windows 2000 again to take advantage of the new processors. iv heard that changing processors will make the OS not recognize that the new ones are there. like going from a tbird to a AXP without reinstalling the OS you cant use the sse2 i think thats what its called.

The big concern is not the stepping but rather you need to find 2 XEON MP models. The standard XEON's are only 2 way and you would require a 4-way version. These are far more expensive than your standard DP version, expect to pay as much as $300 each for 1MB versions (maybe more).

You would need win2k advanced server for a 4-way setup, the standard version will not work with more than 2 CPU's.Quote:

yeah i have advanced server. so i think im in business.
But do you really want to drop another ~$600 on old CPU's?Quote:

Agreed there are more efficent with money ways, but to say you've got a quad proc. machine is something to be proud of. Just the sound of quad proc. makes my eye twinkle.
