i thought neither prescott or it's successor (tejas?) were going to be branded p5? i asked this question multiple time in multiple places. oh well.
That's because some people can't grasp the concept that you don't need an entirely new core to get a bump up in the naming scheme.
I didn't know this, I though HT was first put into the willy cores ?Quote:
This is reminiscent of the Hyper-Threading feature, which was already was integrated in the Pentium III processor hardware.
I don't get this new way of mounting the cpu they were talking about? They said it would be mounted in a similar way that chipsets are, so would that mean that the cpu and mobo come as one package? That would suck if the cpu is fixed onto the mobo :-|
Intel chipsets are socketed.
I always figured they would name it P5. Myself and Steppy said this back in this thread.

:):) That's gonna be a really nice CPU.:)
Yes it will, I am personally waiting for the Prescott boards that can support Tejas (I think they are making models like that, can't remember off the top of my head). That is probably going to be my next setup unless AMD shows me something OCable and cheap with their new line. But, if Intel is gonna keep putting out products like Canterwood boards I am gonna have to go with them. :)Quote:

yeah, but they aren't setup w/ pins and they aren't removable are they? I mean, when you want to upgrade to a newer chipset, the whole motherboard goes.Quote:

"It's not just CPU-related news that we have to report: both manufacturers are working on new platforms as well, with AMD using Socket 754, and Intel, Socket 775 (Socket T, LGA construction) starting Q2 2004. Prior to that point, the Pentium 5 will make its debut on the "old" Socket 478. What's completely new about Socket 775 is the package: with the LGA (Land Grid Array) structure, the processor now no longer has pins; the electrical connection is established via half-spherical contacts, similar to the chipset components. The goal of this modification is to increase the contact surface between socket and processor, thus enabling the flow of very high electricity (100 A and more). "
This may be of interest regarding the socket, it's old, but probably gives you an idea.Quote:

it makes lotta sense and it would make it simpler for an avg. joe out there. p4 has seen so many phases of advancements in it already, its hard to explain to newbie, that there are so many variation and why they exist.Quote:

and i guess its time for p4's heirs to take over the rebuilt intel empire :)
It was quite obvious it would be the P5 i mean form a marketing standpoint AMD was kinda forcing them into it. One brand having a new chip out and the other having the chip that has been labled the same for so long just wouldnt work. So they introduce a new number behind this well known contendor and it is brand new to the consumer and only 5% of the buyers will know that it isnt that big of a breakthrough.
AMD doesn't force Intel to do anything.Quote:

You know the only time i see you post here is when you can argue Intel is better and AMD sucks. That is just not the way to be your comments dont help very many people when you post stuff like that. I dont care what your think if A64 wasnt coming out Intel wouldnt even change the name. Heck if it were not for AMD Intel would very rarely have to change the name of its chips because they always increase in mhz and there biggest breakthroughs dont even seem to get new names anyway like HT and new processes Intel just addes a new number to the pentium name when they see fit form a marketing standpoint. Also note that AMD has made almost every major name change just prior to intels. K7 was prior to the P4 or P7 which ever way your prefer and now the P5 will come out right after the K8. I just dont see that as coincidence when the prescott isnt really that big of a core change where as Tejas would have been a much better place to amke the change because it is likeley LaGrande and a few other technologies will be introduced as operational at that point. Not to mention half od prescotts major advaces are already available. I think that the 30% intel was talking about was before they decied to add the 800mhz bus early.
Most of my posts are in the video card forum talking about new cards and drivers. I'm not here to help people. I'm here to learn new things about computer hardware and howto fix things when they don't work. I couldn't care less if the CPU in my or your computer is AMD or Intel aslong as it works and never lets me down.Quote:

I am however interested in watching people like yourself defend a company who has done nothing for yourself or anyone here.
