Anyone here share a DSL line?

Im thinking of switching to DSL (currently on comcast cable) cause of price reasons... right now im looking at the 384/128K for $39 deals. only thing is that I have to share the connection with 2 other computers in the house.... the great thing about cable was that it gave us 1500/256k and stayed up there for the most part.... im afraid that if we split 384/128K 3-ways, then the connection might be too slow (comparable to 56k or ISDN).. anyone have any experience? anyone here split a low-speed ADSL (100-700K)? can you comment on your download and web browsing experience.. thanks

We still have (verison) DSL 380 down and 130 up in one of our game rooms! The main pc is a p111 1000mhz and it shares 2 k 6-2 550's and they all work OK!!! Its Nothing like 56 k!!! LOL!!! Their all wayyyyy faster!!! We use a Dlink DI 604 router to connect them!
Thats around here anyway! Our main rigs are on cox 3500 down and 500? up! They are much faster but all the rigs are top tier.

I can only tell you how it is here tho!

Rusty- The speed of your computer has nothing to do with the speed of your connection, so I don't even know why you bothered to post about what kind of machines are sharing your DSL. An old 66mhz 486DX hooked up to a T-1 line would make a better web surfing machine than a Pentium 5 4.0GHz with dial-up.

As for sharing lower speed connection with multiple computers- you get what you pay for. Considering modems never connect at 56k anyways, splitting 384kbit/s DSL will still be faster even if all three computers are downloading files at the same time. If 3 or 4 computers are just surfing the web and not downloading porn or something, it will be much better than dial-up.

At the townhouse I live at during school, we have 5 computers hooked up to a DSL line. It's not as fast as having a single line, or as fast as my cable at home, but it's not far behind. Hope that hepls a little, cause I don't know the exact speeds right now:confused:

well 384 down translates into 40K down speed. So each comp would get around 12-13KBS. That should be fin e for web surfing. But if ones starts to D/L it mugh become pretty slow. I think certains routers can limit traffic at certain speeds. Look into that. Or even software

Bandwidth is not split pro rata among the computers on the private net. Bandwidth is used on a first come first served basis - packet by packet. The only time you will notice any slow down is when all the computers are downloading/uploading at the same time.

The only time you'll probably notice a 'hit' is during those "would you hit it" on OT or a thread with lots of pics.

I have a 1.2 dsl line shared with 3 computers, sometimes when downloading large files Im still able to surf with blazing speeds. ascii and a few pixels here there wont take up that much bandwidth.

Downloading would be faster on the 486 but browsing would be terribly slow still.

I answered his question saying that my simular DSL speed is OK using 3 rigs! Whats YOUR PROBLEM with me telling him what kind of rigs I have on the line??? I just gave him an idea how the different rigs worked on DSL with that speed!!! Seeing that your so smart tell me which rig would be faster on DSL!!!
1- K-6 2 550 mhz
2- P-4 3.0 ghz

The speed of the DSL will be the same BUT the K-6 2 will be a bottleneck !!!

here in belgium you get 3.3mbit/128 up for as low as 35euro.
I have a 3.3mb/0.5mbit up line for only 7euro a month

but that's an advantage of working at the Telcomcompany :D

I get mine for free. 1.2/160 :p

good thing is, i no longer work for them but they haven't the heart - or memory - to disconnect me :D

right now im paying $56 (incl tax) for Comcast 1500/256 cable.. wayyy too much

anyone know of any other good deals.. SBC is not available in my area

I pay $50/month for 1.5/128 covad dsl...actual speeds are more like 1250/110...but I love it...it's infinately better than my old 56k and I've been on for 2 days and 10 hours without any slowdowns...it's very reliable from what I've experienced so far...oh yeah...my pings in games range from 30-60 so gaming is very fast too...:)

check out adelphia powerlink. we get 3.5/128(really 300 tho) for 42$ a month. Plus they always have 6 months or 3 months. I got mine for 6 months for 19$
