What do you guys like better? There's some halfway decent deals on them right now, just wondering which you guys would choose. I just ordered a the Maxtor L01P160 (160GB 8MB cache) for 149, with a 50 dollar rebate, but I can always cancel and get a WD. :) What do you guys think?
I've got two, 2 yr old Maxtors that never have given me a hint of a problem. And a 4 yr old Seagate that simply won't die!
I've used a whole bunch of drives from both manufacturers, and would be comfortable recommending either. If you're trying to decide between two particular models, try looking them up on storagereview.com to see if one performs significantly better than the other. If there's not much of a performance difference, just go for the cheaper one.
Yeah, I have 2 maxtors, working great. I've 1 80 giger for over a year, and another for about 6 months.
I've had a few IBM Death stars die, and a few WDs back in the day. I'm just wiggy about the warranties n' stuff. They all seem to die fairly quickly these days. Just tryin to play it safe. What do you think?
I've got a couple 80 & 120 MB Maxtors laying around from around 1991 or 1992 that probably still work fine. Some of 'em were in continuous operation for about 6-7 years. I've also got some pretty old Western Digital and Conner drives that are still humming along.Quote:

I've also got an assortment of pretty ancient SCSI drives that still work, but that's to be expected for SCSI drives.
That's one of the major reasons I bought a Western Digital "Special Edition" drive for my home system -- that's one of the few models that still carries a three year warranty.Quote:

yea, that's why i was considering canceling my order and getting the WD. i might just stick with the 160gb i just picked up from office depot. 149 - 50MIR = 99 + tax = 108. .675 cents a gig. not a bad deal. i'm gonna call OD tomorrow and see if they'll honor the thing they put up in the ad which was wrong, which i found out was wrong AFTER i ordered, and their craptastic inventory. (not a single drive within 75 miles of my 2 residences)
You mean .675 dollars a gig?! .675 cents a gig would be insanely cheap! :eek: I bought a WD 160GB SE hard drive about a month ago and haven't had any troubles with it. I love it to death. :)

My WD is one of the quietest hdds I've owned. They have really turned it around from about 10 or so years ago.
lol, get a Seagate 7200.7 plus (8mb cache). about the same performance of a wd or maxtor, but the silence and reliability of a seagate drive. Oh yeah, the 8mb cache pata versions have a 3year waranty btw. Just bought a 120GB of these @ newegg for 103 or so.
Hard to ignore Seagate's also. btw, newegg is wrong, the plus versions have a 3 year waranty, go read on storagereview.Quote:
