I don't have much of a budget for headphones...less than $50 since I'm already building a SFF PC :) Anyways, I'm somewhat of a music lover, and I realise that you can't have everything but what would be the best headphones given those restrictions? The SFF system is going to have an Audigy 2, and, while, I do like some bass, I'm not interested in something like the Sennheiser 212 with its extra emphasis there.

how about the sennheiser 497s?
A bunch of people have recommended Sennheiser 212s or 202s to me. They sound great, and don't require an amp to do it is the consensus. 212s are like, what $40 bucks at newegg, and people said that the 202s are $20 cheaper, putting them at $20, but i haven't checked these, this is just what people posted.
The "Cheap Headphones" page on HeadRoom's Buyers Guide might give you some decent ideas.
Dude, get the 212's. I've had them for a month now and they are not over bassy. With the Audigy 2 you can always turn it down, so it really doesn't matter.
At that price range, there are some grados he can get like the sr60 ?
Not under $50. The SR60's usually go for around $70. (If he's willing to spend $70, I'd recommend the SR60's in a heartbeat.) Grado's SR40's are under $50, but there are other 'phones I'd recommend first.Quote:

I had been looking at the 497 but I was wondering if anyone had experience with it?
do a search in this forum for it. they're highly reccomend for that price range. best set of open cans for under 50 greens.

the sennheiser 212pro's are a great option...i'd definitely go for them....you can also adjust the bass through software....

I think i've settled on buying Senn 212s anyway, and my fallback option if I need to cut back is a 202.

How on earth are we to recommend to you, when don't have your ears?! : ]
Grados are great with rock music, very bassy, efficent, and can be ran without an amp, and are often said the best cans with no amp.
Sennheisers lower end line, I am not familiar with, but I am familiar with their HD580's, and HD600s, which are very warm sounding cans that benefit from tube amps, and are a taste enjoyed more by some then others.
My Sony CD3000's, are in my opinion the sexiest phones to be had. (I haven't tried very many of these real high end phones, but My other pair is an er4s).
It's very difficult to make recommendations. So you will get crazy different names, numbers thrown at you, and you basiclly cannot take our word for it, you need to either take a chance, (and hopefully make out with a pair you love), or test out a friends.
I have been very lucky, I mail ordered my phones without testing them, read opinions, and loved them.
I read head-fi.org alot, lots of good information there on headphones.
If you really, really want some good ear-educated opinions i recommend looking there and audioasylum.
If you want my opinion, spend 10 bux more and get the SR60, or better yet, spend more money and get what i have : ]

mjg- part of a college set of 'phones is that they're closed, so that you don't annoy your roommate with noise and you can't hear their convos. Ergo, the 212s are better than the sr60s, regardless of a slightly lower SQ.
