I am not happy, is this true that ati cards can permaently artifact

I was talking to "this" guy(he can choose to reveal his identity at his own descreetion) who says sometimes once you see artifacts on ati cards, especially radeon9800s it never goes away, even when you underclock. wow this is sad now. he also said one guy killed many radeon8500s and he didnt even v mod and oced in 5MHz increments then it had light artifacts so he backed off but the artifacts never went away. This is bad then, even if I get a 9800 and oc carefully by 5MHz, could I damage it if I back off the moment it begins to artifact slightly? has this ever happened to anyone and whats the risks? this is a serious thread too that may favor me to Nvidia just because of overclocking

edit for corrections: he just says ati cards die far more often from overclocking. ok he now said: They cant handle long temr OC'ing like Nvidia cards can. Ok he now says its safe to max em out but only for benchmarking but Nvidia cards you can leave oced for long periods of times. This would mean me running ati cards at stock for gaming or Nvidia cards oced to the max. This would really give Nvidia the edge, obviously.

In my experience, this is utter BS. I've had my 9800 Pro (stock = 330) way up to 490, which gave me REALLY heavy artifacts, and once I backed it down to stock (or even 470), the artifacts were gone.

Complete and utter BS - at least in my case.

Then again, why do you care? Judging by your usual choice of GFX cards, I doubt you'll be getting a 9800 ANYTIME soon... ;)

thanks for easing my worries. is it also true or not that ati cards should not be overclocked for extended periods of time. What if say I can do 460 core max, would leaving it at say 440 or 450 for hours at a time while gaming with all the goodies on shorten ati cards any more than doing likewise with Nvidia cards? also have you ever heard of anyone permaently damaging a card by ocing it a few MHz at a time, testing then a bit more till first signs of artifacts show then he backs off. are ati cards any more likley to be permaently artifacted than Nvidia cards nonwithstanding v mods or ocing it to insane levels at once or ocing it higher despite artifacts?

I was the one that told him that... and it's true ;). Just ask a buddy of mine Mysticmagic ;) :).

But yeah... it's true... Since the 8500 days... ATi cards have suffered early deaths due to high overclocks. Just in case both of you dont remember... what happened to Big C's 9800PRO? :(. Nvidia cards can handle OCing better than ATi.. it's a known fact.

Another thing... alot of the things in Tbirds posts are BS... because I told him one thing, and he totally twisted the facts around... but whatever, Im not going to argue that, we all know he's an idiot. But yeah... I'm the one that told him that.

Oh and Tbird...... didn't you just tell me that an OC'ed Nvidia card will own a stock 9800PRO? :confused: ;)

this is happend to me.. if you look at my sig you can see that my 8500le is dead.. thats because i went to the extreme in trying to fix the articats(if you dont' wanna read how i broke the card move to the next paragraph), i put a cpu heatsink on it, and when i got enouch money to get watercooling , i put too much thermal epoxy on the video card.. that when i pried off the heatsink.. i ripped the core right off of the video card..

as for how i got the artifacts, its because i overclocked TOO HIGH TOO FAST, i put on thermaltake ramsinks, and went from 285-285 to 300-310(first overclocking system i had), then i started getting ALOT of artifacts, but i wanted to break the 10k with my 8500le and 2200+ system, so i let it finish 3dmark, and i guess i fired it because of me waiting for it to finish. and from then, the artifacts never went away.. but the weridest thing happend, when i play games, it would have artifacts right away, it would take about 1min for the artifcats to kick in. also windows looked fine..

but if you play it safe then your vid card should be fine..

Well, this is strange. In my defense, however, notice how I said "In my experience" numerous times? ;)

As far as Colossus's fried 9800 goes, he was using stock cooling, and I think he kept it on high OC's 24/7... I never go above 1.6 AGP voltage, and I ONLY OC my 9800 when benchmarking (well, I've played BF1942 @ 420/360 a couple times).

you can't really fry your vid card from agp voltage, becaues your vid card handles its own voltages, AGP voltage is just for when you go out of spec (66mhz) and you wanna keep stable at higher FSB..

Ahh! That explains why I didn't notice a stability difference. :D

See... that's where Tbird's stupidity, and posting ignorance comes in. He didn't clarify that I meant to say, that ATi cards have a MUCH higher death rate due to 24/7 OC'ing... which is true. However, if you run an Nvidia card at high speeds, your chances of death are much lower :). It's just an ATi thing. He even called me a wuss for not "maxing out" my 9800PRO, LMAO! And my reply to that was... "for what? Games run fast enough" And that's what triggered, yet another, useless tbird thread :).

None of my posts were directed towards you per se. But I simply knew that Tbird would butcher my words in one way or another... to stir some things up... which of course... he did :).

Speaking of stirring things up... Have you noticed that my Nature FPS is significantly higher than yours, even though my score is over 2000 points lower? :p (ok, yeah, I just did a new run, and I have a surprise for you all regarding vertices and me and Nature :D)
