steam, counterstrike, what happened??

id first like to start by telling you all just how cheap i really am. most people rush to the local best buy to get games as soon as their released before they sell out. me, i buy them 5 monthes late so i can get a good deal on a used copy. who needs instruction manuals anyway? and trust me, the game DOES run better when the cd is scratched. (thats my little tip for the day). ANYWHO...

i bought half-life today. the original one. im just about 100 and a half years old. but its cool. sooo, uhhhh, yeha i downloaded steam and i cant get it to read half-life or any of its mods, including counterstrike. wich is really not cool. so does that just suddenly not work with the original counterstrike. cause im really confused right now, and i want it to work and i dont know why its not, i installed everything right, i think. bah, im so lost.

You gotta register(make an account) your copy of Half Life with the CD key it came with on steam. Then you should be able to download all the mods via steam associated w/ HL, namely CS.

Don't even bother installing from the original CDs. Just download steam, install half life/counterstrike/other mods and put in the cd key your game came with when it asks you for it.

how is that cheap? trust me, some of us here don't even buy games, yet we get to play them once it comes out ;)

i used to be one of those people but im a changed man now. lol.

and the thing is, i used to have steam installed and then i had all the mods installed and working. and it turns out i accidently made two accounts so i was just logging in under the wrong account. cause one had my cd key registered with it and one didnt. anywho, is there anyway to change my in game name to make it different from my steam name?

Yeah, open up console (~ key) and type in name "name here" and press enter.

Isnt it usually a bit hard to play online with those editions? Basically rendering it a single player only.

There are cracked servers...there is even a whole website to maintaining and listing cracked servers.

is it possible that the used copy he has maybe some1 already registered that cdkey to make it unusable?

Yeah, I bet those guys don't cheat =|

I just think people should buy the games, I don't see what the big deal is.

I think it's mainly youngins like me who don't have the money to be the games they want, and the parents won't buy it for them.

i don't have 50$ to throw away weekly on random games. it's a rather big deal for some people.

i acquire games that look interesting in any way i can.. if i end up enjoying the game, i'll probably buy it when i have the extra money. i do the same thing with music - i download albums from wherever, then go ahead and buy them if the album turns out to be good whenever i have some extra money sitting around.

some of us are neither in the well-established realm, nor in the haveajobbutlivingwithparentssodonthavetopayforanythingexcept whateverthehellyouwanttobuy realm.. but somewhere inbetween. and that inbetween is generally financially lacking.

edit: and yeah, then you have the younger kids with no kind of money at all whose parents aren't fond of buying games every other day. people can acquire games however they want, i don't see what the big deal is.

Its that whole crazy capitalism thing our country seems to be founded on. Not being able to have something because you cant afford it is just part of how things work. Do you have 17 hot wired cars in your garage because you dont have $20,000/car to throw away?

No offense, but I doubt it. If you had extra money lying around you wouldnt have said the previous quote. And when we do get extra money, I seriously doubt we go buy the games/music we already have for free.

Im with ya man, but for me, I had to be honest with myself. If I dont have the money to buy something I dont think I should go steal it, even if I wont get caught, or I can rationalize it. Im not saying I have never pirated before, far from it. But I did stop quite a while ago and havent since.
