VR headset? what ever happened?

I remember like 2-3 years ago there were a bunch of supposely VR head set that came out.
such as the CyberMaxx and the Virtual IO headsets.

What ever happened to the VR headset fad?

I had the Virtual IO. before but it was for NSTC (video in) and resolution is not so good so the image was kinda blurry.

Are ther any affordable VR-headset that's usable for PC?

If it can display 640x480 and it's got a clear picture then I figure it would be KILLER for some Quake3 or Unreal Tournament.

The only thing close to what you're talking about that I can think of is the 3D glasses that come with my Asus V8200....they're pretty good, but sometimes they give me headache. Problem is, you need an insane refresh rate for your monitor, cuz it needs doubling to achieve the 3D effect. So if you want to see in 60 Hz refresh rate through the glasses, you need 120 Hz refresh for your monitor at that resolution. So, to get good 85 Hz rate, you'll need an insane 170 Hz refresh rate... good thing my Viewsonic PF790 supports 180 Hz at 640X480 and 800X600 https://www.sharkyforums.com/.

I remember those well.. I think it was just too expensive and people werent going to go for it.. also.. what could you play on it? Dont think any or many game producers jumped on the bandwagon.

I think the whole VR thing has sorta gone into obscurity...I remember 7 years ago when all people talked about was VR and how everything that we did in our daily lives would eventually be done through a VR headset....Hollywood also helped to hype the fad through movies such as the "Lawnmower Man"...But it looks like this fad has only really taken off in the military/aviation/scientific fields where immersive environments that use expensive graphics modelling for is necessary...Nowadays, people have lost interest in incorporating VR into gaming and are not willing to fork over the necessary fundage to get setup with a decent VR setup (apart from the fact that it's not all that available)...

I know this is an OLD thread, but I recently aquired a VR Cybermaxx Headset from ebay.
Can anyone let me know where I can get drivers for this? for either XP, 2000, or even 98 if I have to :P

I was an early adopter.

Had the Forte VFX1 in 1995 with only a few games that supported it. Headset plugged into a proprietary ISA card. Head tracking was actually great... but the resolution and colour depth sucked. 320x200 with 256 colours I think. Playing Eurofighter, I couldn't read the altimeter... kina a problem. Cool concept though.

I now own the evolution of that headset, the VFX3D that came out around 1999. It plugged in via USB cable, and was compatible with Win98SE. It had even more agmes that supported it. Resolution was like 800x600 and depth was like 24 bit. I BIG improvement.

Recently I have been interested in the Z800 (first became aware of it with a $50 discount off it when I bought Blazing Angels)... and have heard a few people here who have had it. They said that it worked pretty well, but was not worht the price tag.

VR sets have not become mainstream, but I think that they will someday. Especially for flight sims, they are just way too cool.

Forte was bought out by IISVR, and I think that IISVR was bought out by the company that you provided.

the problem with these displays is the price..
for the price of these things, I can geta big screen hDTV and it looks better

for example the Z800 I had claims I get a 102" screen viewed from 12 feet away..
but in reality it has the same effect as a 20" monitor seen from 3 feet away. and with a regular monitor I have a higher resolution and better color/quality display.

I got rid of the z800,paid alittle bit more and got myself a 42" LCD and couldn't be happier...

anyone reading this.. be WARNED the Z800 is NOT WORTH the money..

- and their warranty is only 90 days.. for a $900 item.. I would be worried.

They are really trying to bring the cost down now, because there's actually a market for these things. What is that, you might ask? iPods. There's actually a company out there that has a cheap model wearable display specifically for use with iPods. I'll see if I can find a link.

The market for these used to only be people with notebooks, and even then you had battery issues and small HDDs, making it not very practical. You'd be able to watch a single movie, and that's about it. Now with the iPod, which everyone already has, there's a good market for this kind of tech.

The Z800 do head tracking?

If so, that's one thing the monitor can't do.

I dont wanna use it for games, I wanna use it in remote control of a robot I`m working on,
IE, I move my head, and it moves it`s, and I see what it sees, with a graphic overlay maybe.

it does headtracking and it seems to do it pretty well.

the problem is the image quality of the z800 is not that good. (better than most VR headset yes, but nothing compared to a regular monitor/hdtv)

and on top of that it's only 800x600 resolution. some games just doesn't work on 80x600 and if they do the menu is kindabig and blocky..

and that was nearly 2 years ago I test it.
