it looks pretty. hehe

boo! bah!
Yep, it sure is pretty https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif
It may cool a little better than a stock HSF, but not much. You could better spend the money on a good case fan. If you're looking for a great HSF, do some research and get an Alpha or something from www.3dcool.com

I totally agree. People are so enamored with the Orb because it is cool looking. But performance wise, it is not that much better than a stock HSF. I have said it a million times in this forum, but the Alpha and GlobalWin HSF's kick the Orb's butt.Quote:

the way i see it, you can have a million cfm massiv hsf, but with no case fans its not gonna make much difference. from experience, putting an old psu fan in the front bottom blowing in and another one just below the psu blowing out makes much more difference than upgrading your hsf, plus its free (if youve got some broken 486s lying around!)

It looks good and it is cheap. If you look for performance look for Alpha/Global Win, but if you want better then average kewl looking thing on top of ya CPU, get GoldenOrb. Just don't expect ya CPU to breake any o/c records, or run 5 degrees above the case temp.
Well said. Performance-wise the Orb can't touch the Alpha/GW, but it is more effective than stock cooling and it looks cool. https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gifQuote:

personaly, i think that the GORB sucks ***, my friend got one on his 566@ 850 or so and it was running really hot. he got an alpha and it was cool again.
the gorb is now a pretty thing sucking air out of the top of his case. looks cool and that is all
I've got a celery 566 @ 850 with a goldenorb. I got it because it's a helluva lot cheaper than most other coolers and I wanted to buy something for the short term, until I get a nice peltier cooling system sometime in the near future. I have to say I was suprised and impressed by the orb, it's price/performance ratio is far better than the alphas etc. but then again, the alphas are better and if you can afford those extra $$s then go for an alpha. (unless of course you are one of those ponces who would but an orb because of its look and build a perspex window into the side of their case just so that they can see it!).

I have used it on my thunderbird nearly smashed the CHip to bits MATE !!
this is not worth it even if u get it at bargain price... TRY THE FOP32 Global win. or THE EXCELLENT TAISOL these are very very GOOD ... whick im using on the Thunderbird 850 at 1ghz at 40deg where i had the ORB at 44deg HOTTT!!!!
And they are very difficult to place on board where u have capacitors close to the WOCKET.. And they do and will make u hear ur chip get crushed
I love my Orb. Running my 533A between 824-896 I've never cracked 95F even after hours of Q3. Usually I'm running a CPU temp between 77-83F with my Orb. Alpha is best, but not by much. Orb certainly is a great value too.
I have a friend who has an o/c duron. He did it by unlocking the multiplier. He has a gold orb and his system still stays at about 40 degrees C. He has no case fans, except for the one in the PS. How much will adding case fans lower his cpu temp?
I agree with anything and everything that mpitts says https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

The Golden Orb is a great CPU cooler in some ways, and a bad cooler in others. For starters, it does look nice, but honestly people, who the hell cares? The Golden Orb does do a great job of cooling for only $19. You will get a little more performance from an Alpha, but that will run you $39. As for the bad parts: it's a ***** to intsall and uninstall. The way you place it over the CPU is weird; you have to twist it on until it's nice and tight, and it's even harder to take off. The other bad part is that you can't use this cooler on a Duron processor! I review crap like this all the time and I have destroyed 2 precious AMD Duron processors until Thermaltake finally emailed me saying that the Chrome Orb (also $19) is what fits the Duron. =(
ooo, that must suck!Quote:
