Blasting lots of simple minded monsters is cool for a time but recent games like Psycho Circus and the Serious Sam demo have convinced me that that kind of thing alone isn't enough to carry a game any more. I find hunting down an intelligent foe like the marines in Half Life or the Skaarj in Unreal much more satisfying and challenging to be honest. A bit of both is fine to keep things interesting, but I'm not overly keen on these games that are largely copying the gameplay of Doom so long after its release now - none of them are as fun as Doom was, not by far.
