Rambus

I've a question... I just ordered new parts for a new PC for myself...a p4 system with rambus support. Just now however I read that rambus( rdram whatever it is?) only works in pairs and I only ordered a 256mb chip...is it true, or what? Or how does it work?
any help greatly appreciated.

oh yeah, I ordered the mobo from here :

and the ram as well, anyone know how it works with these guys? If i selected 256mb, will I get two 128mb chips or just a single 256 forcing me to buy more?

yep u got it right if you orderd 1 256 Mb stick you have a problem.

you need 2* 128 or obviously 2 *256

Just order another 256 stick with a nice system like that 512 Mb is really not overkill!!

If you can't cough up the money contact teh guys now and say u need 2 128Mb sticks

Just for reassurance he is right you must by a second stick or you are going to have some major problems. DDRAM blows when it comes to performance with the P4 so do yourself a favor and try and shell out another 256MB stick or just buy 2 128MB sticks :).

RDRAm is the performance leader for the P4 ;)

Uh, PC2700 DDR RAM is nearly just as good as PC800 RDRAM.
I don't know what you're talking about? There's "that latency thing" with RDRAM, as well. ;)

Remember if you have 4 ram slots you have to fill all 4 slots. You can order DUMMY's to fill the extra slots.

It always was. On P4 systems all 4 RIMM's have to filled im, the ones that you dont have RAM you put these special fake RIMM's in called C-Rimm's (which come with the motherboard)into the empty slots ;)

I'm sure you have to fill all the slots. The fillers are called continuity rimms.

That's certainly subjective. I wanted to go DDR333 with my mobo, and I'm fond of Asus, so I got the p4s333. I personally find it the best.

A lot of people like the TH7II-RIAD, as well. :)

If it meets your specs, then you're really just choosing between brands, and using preference. A lot of your popular mobos are Epox, Abit, Asus, and MSI. :)

I still think if you look at price vs. performance, the P4 with DDR (Sis645 chipset) looks the best. ;)

Yeah, but since RDRAM keeps up with the P4 much better than DDR as the speed increase, getting RDRAM now(providing you can clock it at PC1066(533 Mhz) your next P4 will be MUCH happier and your current one will still run better for not much more money(other than the mobo)

DDR RAM is good if you'd want to save a few bucks on a Pentium 4 system (and indeed, Pentium 4's are pretty cheap nowadays). RDRAM is still much better than DDR and it'll stay that way for quite some time.

But I still question Rambus' ethics: they attemped to sue every RAM manufacturer for copyright infringments :confused:

Go price some RDRAM and some quality DDR. You will find the RDRAM cheaper or the same price.

STOP SAYING DDR IS CHEAPER THAN RDRAM.

Word. I know some dude who still thinks RDRAM is $800 and that DDR r0x0rz j0r b0x0rz. I am like "dude have you checked prices in the last 5 months" and guess what his answer was. Well he made a fool out of himself for 30 minutes until he verified it himself. It pisses me off that people argue about things that are so easy to check out and make sure you know what your talking about.

Snoop, you're forgetting about the latency issues with RDRAM that DDR doesn't have. ;)

No I remember about the latency issues with RDRAM I just didn't tell him about that LOL :). Dont worry I believe Rambus is working on fixing that sometime this year with a new chips based off a better design then the old ones.

RDRAM's latency decreases as its speed increases. It's been said many times that running it at pc1066 its latency is actually less than ddr. RDRAM hasn't even hit its stride yet, and ddr is nearing the end of its life cycle. A quad channel RDRAM chipset offers tons more bandwidth than ddr and can be implemented with fewer pins than a dual channel ddr chipset(ie much easier to make).

That only proves that RDRAM and DDR are different, and at this point there is no definite winner. Either way you go though, DDR333 or PC800 RDRAM, you're getting performance. :)

I wouldn't call either of the systems "slow."
With the new DDR that'll be coming out, I think DDR's still in the game. :)

With my parents newest system, I went with the cheaper of the 2 types, RDRam :) Really upsets me that I didn't purchase more DDR for my AXP system when it was 1/3 of the price. Now the thought of filling all four slots is out of the question.
