I AM GETTING AN ATI Radeon 9700!

Call me a fanboy, but it looks to me, ATI has just wiped the floor with nVidia. Not only do they far superior 2D and 3D features and quality enhancements, but the R9700 is undoubtedly the fastest graphics card available. Was there ever a doubt? :D Not in my mind, at least! :D I saw ATI's drivers progress and I knew ATI was cooking up something good. They've been secretly releasing R300 components into their drivers for 6 months now. What this means is that the R300 drivers are already semi-mature!

The AIW Radeon 9700 is also going to ENCORE MPEG2 IN HARDWARE!.

Imagine video editing without having to wait several minutes (or even hours depending on the length and complexity of the editing you've done) for the app to produce the video in MPEG2! Now, all the CPU has to do is apply the filters and the Radeon card will do the rest! I don't know about you, but ATI is shaking the industry. I'm predicting video editing will so be very common among enthusiasts! :D

One thing that bothers me a little is that the 9700 isn't based off the Unified drivers architecture so any bug fixes previously made may come back to huant users again, but I really don't know so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. The no-brainer thing is that if does have bugs it should be ironed out relatively quickly given ATi's improved stance on driver quality.

R300 retails for $399.99 MSRP and should be widely available within 30 days.

I want one too, but $399 is kinda stretching the envolope a bit... I wish they'd have the R9500 come out along with the R9700. But I don't want to wait for R9500 and plus, if thier guess is right, then with only 4 pipes and slower clock speeds, it'll be quite a bit slower I'd say...

BTW AMD_Man, please read your PM box. I have a question about your TH7II.

I think they did that because the current devolper is tired of trying to fix problems with the current drivers. What bugs me is this probably means their will be very few updates to the Radeon 8500 :(

Anandtech.com stated the reason they departed from UDA is because the 9700 is incompatible with the 8500 DirectX file libraries. ATi claims to get UDA up and running again in future products after the DirectX 9 ATi parts.

Thing is, Nvidia has kept the same UDA ever since the original TNT, now that is impressive. 3 DirectX generations of driver unification and still going strong.

Well, I can relate. ATi doesn't want to screw this up like the R8500 launch. I'm sure they're just trying to keep everything together. Better safe than sorry as they say!!;)

If the 9500 still keeps the 256-bit memory bus then it should be around GeForce4 performance or slightly better.

Yeah, see that's the thing. If it performs like a Ti4600 is is priced at $249-299, then why not get a Ti4600, cause I'm sure the prices of those cards will drop quite a bit.

Well ATI does have some time to iron out driver problems, The card review was not final.

Increases in scores will come out.

Yeah, I'm gonna be waiting a bit to build my comp. I'm gonna probably get this card. I was kinda hoping for something around $500CDN, which would be around $329USD. Hopefully the online retailers will sell for less than $399.

UT2003 - 1600x1200x32; 4XAA; 16XAF – The Radeon 9700 doused the Ti4600 by about 25%. Now get a load of this, that is with the GF4 running without AA or AF. With 4XAA turned on the Ti4600 was crushed by nearly 300%. The Radeon 9700 simply made quick work of the Ti4600 under this UT2003 demo.

3DMark2001 – Using the default benchmark at 10x7 with no AA nor AF turned on, the Radeon 9700 exceeded the Ti4600’s score by approximately 20%. Where most of the score boost came from was the Nature demo as the Radeon 9700 was posting frame rates of right at 200% of the Ti4600 numbers.

Comanche 4 Demo - 1600x1200x32; 4XAA; 16XAF – Again approximately 25% ahead of the Ti4600 with the Ti running no AA or AF compared to the full on settings of the Radeon 9700.

Last, but certainly not least, a benchmark we don’t use as it is made by NVIDIA, tweaked by NVIDIA, and configured for NVIDIA hardware, the Chameleon demo. At 1600x1200 the Radeon 9700 doubled the Ti4600 scores.

Actully the drivers are completely new and written from scratch.. So I guess there goes your theroy on that..

Well, If we were all rich I guess no one would care about throwing out an 8500 just cause the new one is out.. unfortunately most people don't have that kind of money. So hopefully Ati will continue to work on the drivers for the 8500 otherwise it could leave a bitter taste in some peoples mouth of they drop support for it already..

I was kidding. And I'm sure they'll update the R8500 line still, cause the R9000 would use the same drivers right? And anyways, how many people do you think would have R9700/9000 compared to R8500/R7500/R7200/R7000.

From what I read it was the Direct X driver that was completely re-written so it isn't exactly "from scratch" as OpenGL seems to be unified.

No I was talking about R9500, but no I'd still get a R9500 over the Ti4600 cause it'd have DX9 support and Ti4600 doesn't. And I'm sure even the R9500 would trounce the Ti4600 anyways. Just pure speculation right now.

Well, since the GF4 is a DX8 card and the R300 is a DX9 card, what did you expect? Obviously the newest card will probably be fastest..

When the NV30 comes out and beats the R300 (assumming it does), couldn't the samething be said about people who bought the R300? Not that it matters anyway, the R300 will be plenty fast still when the NV30 comes out, just like the ti4600 is still still a fast card now.

Or are you hoping for some type of R9700le?

I agree, ATI will most likely continue to update the 8500 drivers.. but according to Anandtech:

"When ATI showed us the Radeon 8500, they promised that they would finally be moving to a Unified Driver Architecture (UDA) like NVIDIA. But after conversing with one of ATI’s software engineers, we have learned that the R300’s DirectX drivers are completely new.

For starters, they are not based off of the Radeon 8500’s DX drivers, which means that the move to a UDA back with the Radeon 8500 was never really made since the next-generation architecture cannot use the codebase from the previous generation UDA."

So they don't use the same Drivers..

But there's a big difference; in the past a new card would edge out the older card by just a little bit. This new card from ATI isn't just edging out the Ti4600, it is smashing it to little pieces. It's taking benchmarks made for Nvidia products by nvidia and doubling the scores of the highest end nvidia card.

Oh I'm pretty sure they did, just a sec, I'll look it up. Basically the R9500 would be a R9700 with slower clock speeds and 4 instead of 8 pipelines, which could severely limit performance, compared to the R9700.

Ok at Anandtech's R9700 review, they said this:
