Unreal 2: Better Than Ut2003??

Seems that many people were disappointed with UT2003. Forgetting that IT HASN'T ACTUALLY BEEN RELEASED IN AUSTRALIA YET! "Oh forget about that small island in the southern hemisphere! We might send them a copy or 2 by 2005!!" BAH!!

Seems people are now waiting for Unreal 2 to come out as it is said to have better texturing, water FX, and a much higher level of geometric detail than UT2003 had. Apparently UT2003 had to be somewhat tamed down to keep the online play performance at acceptable levels. Unreal2 will not have these restrictions as it is SINGLE PLAYER only (At the moment anyhow).

Do you guys have any comments about how Unreal2 will stack up against UT2003???

I thought character models would use slightly more polys for U2 than ut2k3 uses...

are they really not putting any multiplayer in there? that would really suck :( it would be nice to run around with vehicles and kill stuff multiplayer style.
damn, i wish halo for pc would come out sometime...

Yeah, Unreal 2 is gonna be single-player only, and on the topic of Halo...
GO TO HELL, MICROSOFT!!!!!
If everyone remembers, Halo looked kickass when it was originally gonna be PC Only, games supporting something like 64 players in huge maps, it looked like it would top even Unreal Tournament as the best god damned multiplayer game ever made, but then MS had to come in and shittify it by having it rushed out as an X-Box only POS!!!!

Only peaple that are dissapointed with ut2k3 are little girl, the game itself is pure madness and most just either suck too much to play it or there system suck and they just cant play it.

Unreal 2 looks promising. As someone stated before, since UT2003 was intended primarily for multiplayer "twitch" type of play, some of the graphics detail had to be watered down a bit. Hopefully Unreal, with it's single player emphasis will have all the bells and whistles set to max.

As for people not liking UT2003. Well...The world would be fairly dull if everyone liked the same types of things. However if I don't like something, I usually just leave it alone and don't talk about it. I don't understand why some people feel the need to harp endlessly on about a game they reportedly don't like. Take the thing back to the store. Sell it to a friend. Use it as a doorstop. Just don't keep telling me about it.

Some months ago that all changed when they realised that UT2003 would have to be somewhat watered down visually to allow for the quick movement style that multiplayer needs. So, UT2003 would end up looking less impressive than Unreal2. If Unreal2 had been released first people's expectations would be sky high for UT2003. When that didn't happen people would feel that UT2003 was a cheap money grab and have delusions of being robbed of their hard earned cash for a lesser title. SO, Unreal2 was delayed untill the UT2003 horse had been well and truly flogged.

THEN of course, a conspiracy theorist would argue that UNREAL2 will be in direct competition with DooMIII. What better way to kill the opposition than to steal their thunder with a product that is better than theirs. IT follows that unreal2 is meant to take the limelight away from DooMIII. DooMIII is a single player game, so is unreal2. BOTH games reportedly have features we've just never seen before. We're going to have Duke Nukem VS Quake all over again. Except this time it'll be DooMIII VS UnrealII

Well, I always thought Unreal 1 was better than Quake 2. I'm so excited for Unreal 2 now.

By the way, Halo PC is being updated and improved (especially multiplayer maps) to get released on the PC very soon. Read that in PC Gamer.

I'd actually be happy that it's Single-Player-only. I'm frankly SICK of all these online games that appear all over the place, they're really just simple clones of Quake 1's Multiplayer if you put you're mind to it.

agreed....I wish there would be more single player only games out there instead of games saying that the single player will "prepare" you to play online...and then they promise that the multiplayer will be the best ever etc etc...kinda sucks that games are moving away from the single player arena and venturing into the multiplayer arena when the game is ment for single player...don't get me wrong...I like multiplayer games but it comes to a point where imo you can't beat out a good single player game....take deus ex for example...an excellent single player game (although I'm sure some will disagree) people begged for multiplayer...they then released multiplayer via patch...and it blew chunks....some games aren't just to be made for multiplayer...however games with co-op are fun :) I wish more games had this...but then again after awhile the fun of that looses it's touch because in most co-op games when you die you just respawn and you don't start over again...so you aren't under the pressure like you are when you play by yourself offline...

I never played the original Unreal, and while I enjoyed, and still do, the original UT, I'm not at all impressed with UT2K3. I'll give the Unreal 2 demo a shot and if I like that I will pick it up, but I was totally unimpressed with UT2003.

From what I have heard Unreal 2 will have better details and higher poly counts then even UT2K3 since it used a more later engine build. Also I found every Unreal 2 pic better then the best UT2K3 pic out there which shows alot. Plus it is single player *yippie* and they were nice enough to implete the networking/multiplayer code in the game that UT2K3 used so that MOD teams could make mods for Unreal 2 that worked for online battles. There is actually a MOD crew on standby now waiting for Unreal 2 to be released so they can make UT2K3 and Unreal 2 code compatable with each other so a UT2K3 mod will work for people who own Unreal 2 and so forth. Basically the MOD crew is expanding on the networking architexture that was built into the engine so that way you wont have to buy both games to play online and all the mods.

I agree that the original Unreal was far superior to quake 1, II, and III for that matter. In fact the original Unreal would still stack up nicely against todays games very well. It was the first time we saw nice detail textures and high res textures as well. The only beef with it was that the whole engine was designed around VooDoo Architecture. That meant you really needed a 3dfx card to run the game properly. In the beginning a non 3dfx card would not run the game at all. Then we did get some direct 3D patches but they were very limited and buggy implementations.

Unreal 1 was also the first time we had really seen any outdoor settings worth a damn, and had them running with the same fluidity as indoor settings. If you haven't played it, you really should.

It also had laughable network programming, the developers admit that. But it was still a fun game.

If i remember corectly U2 will use 2x the polys of ut2k3

I really hope they have multi in U2 and they damn well better have dark match!! (yes, you heard it here first. ranger likes unreal)

It's U2, not UT2.

And dark match? I think your best bet would be a mod for UT2003.

Oops. Typo corrected. I hate UT!!

Seeing as i never saw a dark match mod for UT, i doubt i will see a mod for ut2k3. most of the maps for ut were too large for a good dark match anyway........

Some maps work. And if there were more people interested in darkmatch, I'm sure we'd see a lot of custom darkmatch maps.

BTW, I made one for Unreal, but it ended up too large and didn't play well with bots.
