A friend asked me to recommend an AMD based OC system to him,
and while I would basically build it on an ASUS A7N8X or EPOX
8RDA(+) paired with either a 2100+ (Tbred B) or maybe 2600+,
I'd just love to get some input from OC'R'US.

Epox 8RDA
SLK-900
Maybe throw in a set of Corsair Twin-X DDR sticks or some of that kingston Hyper-X, simmer lightly, serve warm and enjoy.
Everything he said would be perfect. Just beware of using Corsair and the Epox 8RDA. Even the Twin-X stuff doesn't overclock well in the 8RDA. I'd gp for the kingston HyperX.Quote:

Can you just use any pair of DDR for DC?
Do you benefit more from DC or a higher OC due to only having 1 stick?
Generally systems dotn benefit much form DC but lately many DC systems have been able to overclock very well just beacue their ram is fast enough that doing 180-210fsb barely stresses it. Also going with the a7n8x would greatly hender him from reaching a max overclock because the vcore cant be set higher than 1.8v which is usually a good thing for begginers and addicted overclockers alike. It might be wise to wait and see what the 2500+ barton can do though becasue so far the 3000+ looks like a decent overclocker and a 2500+ barton might be just as good. As for the ram i woudl go with pc3000 kingston hyperx because rigth now at excaliberPC they have it for $85 and for ram that is awsome plus many people aroudn here have reportedly maxed out their cpus well before maxing out their ram.
8RDA = king of OCing boards...but they should've left the damn 3.2Vdimm option in there :(
Oh wells, you can still pump in a massive 2.2Vcore :D
DCDDR doesn't make much of a difference on AMD platforms, a few percent, but hey, every little bit counts.
So we have an EPOX 8RDA(+), XP 2100+ (Tbred B), Kingmax Hyper-X PC 3000 DDR.
How about powersupply? Enermax or Antec? (what model)
1 512 MB memory chip or 2x256?
What fan for the heatsink? (candidates for HS are SLK series, AX-7, and Coolermaster's heatpipe)
1 512mb is probably better in the long run it allows you to add another to go DC and gives you the option to upgrade to 1gb. Which with current mem prices is now viable.Quote:

Powersupply, I'm using Antec True Powers exculsivly now and couldn't be happier. 430w should be enough but there's nothing but the price stopping you going with 480 or 550w.
SLK-900 will give you the best cooling bar none. Just match it with a fan that suits your desired noise level.
The power supply I would recommend for this operation (if it can still be found), would be an Antec PP412X. Those are great power supplies! Alot of juice. Weighing in at 400 watts... and with adjustable rails for the +12 and +5. Great power supply... definately legendary :).
I havent personally tried the Antec TRUE series... but I have however tried the Enermax. All the overclocking in my AMD rig has been using an enermax 431w psu. Its a great pSU.. but however... as my Vcore rises.. my +5 begins to drop :). My +12 is off the hook.. but my +5 is not where i would like it to be :(. I wish I had another Antec PP412X, hehe :).
hey skywize...tell your friend to go for 2.7ghz :D someone needs to top lostlilchild and saps.
See my sig. I went with 2x256 because I couldn't afford 2x512 and wanted to take advantage of the DCDDR. Also decided to go with a SLK/SmartFan II combo and an Antec SmartBlue 350 PSU. Would have picked a TruePower, but again, my budget got in my way. lol
Since we're talking about excaliberpc and PSU's they have got them cheaper than anywhere else. Provantage is a tad cheaper before shipping but they charge $11 for shipping. I actually did order a 550 True Power when I got my second 512 of pc3000. The price $99 was what I paid for the 430 from best buy. Admittedly, I had a coupon but nonetheless the 550 will be the last PSU I buy for a long time.
You have 2 sticks of 512 in your 2100+ OCd rig, Saps?
is the 'true power' worth the extra money?
kirkyg
My second stick arrives today. With the second stick I may have to back down the FSB, we'll see.Quote:

IMO yes. Considering the PSU powers the system and considering the True Power does not share any lines or rails. For an OCer that's a huge plusQuote:
