52x burner crushes media

I just finished installing my new lite-on 52x burner, I tried to test burn my first Cd and I started hearing some stange sounds. Fisrt It sounded like a rubbing or friction noise and it started to get very loud. The drive started to eject the CD and then bam I hear this loud clashing sound. Then my computer screen went blank. I unpluged the syustem and let it cool down. I manually pulled out the Cd Tray and sur eenoguh found the Remanets of a Cd. I'm using a shuttlecase and the shards went though the drive into the motherboard. It also left some marks on my Geforce 4 but im unable to see if it still works. the motherboard is shot but besides the Video card that may be it. The ram looks undamaged. I imeidaitly called the tech support number on the back of the book and talked to the representative. They said the problem is with only with the LTR-52246S and it involves too much data trying to be burned onto a CD. The Burner Can not reach the very edges of the disk and keeps increasing th eRpm to try to. The difference is within 340k so They said i should have burned the cd with under 700mb of info on it to be safe. They saidf that they will replace the burner but no the Mobo and/or video card. Irf you have a LTR-52246S make sure to dl the lasted firmware update that should stop the burner for trying to reach the end. The are also starting a recall.

thanks for the heads up, I guess it may be a good thing that newegg was all sold out of those and I opted for the new samsung. but man, a cd blowing up in your drive? how fast was that thing spinning?

I don't know I think it started to speed up when it was trying to read the edge. Man that thing really got loud.

I'm tempted to call April Fools..unless the CD managed to penetrate the metal case of the CD-RW drive..

I've overburned (to maybe 720-730mb) without any problems..

Where's the 52x Lite-On? ;)

The sys specs are out o' date. I just bought the new Burner and haven't updated site for about a month. I have had my mobo fixed for a while. (not anymore) I took some pictures on my 35mm camera and will get them on a picture CD. (Don't have a digatal yet since i payed about $400 for the 35mm 2 years ago) The Cd penatrated the Cd Drive case in 2 places While leaving dents in others. Also I have been able to overburn on my old burner and I should have mention this is what i was trying (724mb Iso file)

the new plextor 48x drives have reinforced bezels so that if a CD shatters, it is less likely to physically harm the user. Also, the media in a high-end CD-RW can spin at up to 10,000 RPM. That's fine for metallic, prefectly balanced HDD platters, but for an unbalanced plastic optical disc, there's a LOT of inherent risk.

Yes, CDs have been known to explode (shatter) so that's just a reminder to purchase top-knotch media, to redice the risk of having imbalanced media and microfractures already present.

Well I will stick with my Plextor 48x :) I dont care for the 5 second difference between 48x and 52x :)

ALSO I doubt a piece of the CD media can penetrate the metal case of your drive. :)

See the front of your CD drive? It's just some flimsy plastic. Take a CD spinning at 10k RPM, shatter it. See how the little plastic bezel holds up. That's why the plex 48X drives have a reinforced front bezel, so that you're less likely to get a ler or face full of plastic shrapnel.

I can understand it going through the front bezel, since it is just inplace with 4 snap clips :)

But not going through the metal case of the drive and damaging the motherboard and/or video card. Doesnt seem to likely to me.

I don't know about penetrating steel... but I've had that happen to me on a regular 52x CD-ROM:

I believe it is quite possible.

Consider the angular velocity of the edge of a disc, a plastic shard breaks off all of the angular velocity gets turned into instantenous linear acceleration (because the point of break constitutes a change in refrence frame). If it catches a nice point behind a suffecient shaped chunk of disc.

Yeah....and if a tornado can shoot a piece of straw through a telephone pole, I imagine a sharp piece of plastic could make it's way through the drive's bezel.....but it DOES sound very unlikely that the plastic could penetrate the metal drive casing and continue on to damage components on a motherboard...But hey, I guess it's possible..

I just made some calculations and at 12000rpm, witch is less then what a 52X will do, the outer edge of a CD is going at 167Mph(linear). That means a cd piece can easyly hit the cd-rom case at 150Mph.

It's quite unlikely that it would be able to go trough the metal case, but the back is sometimes made of plastic so it may be possible.

Also my HD started spining to fast, came off the spindle, and started a tornadoe. Wait for the lastest firmware fix.
