I love action games. FPS's to be exact. I love all of em'. I think you forgot a very important genre. RTS!;)
*edit* just saw the "add your favorite and be heard". Well I think RTS should be up there.:)
RPGs are the only thing that really grabs my attention and holds it with a vice like grip. Though I pretty much play FPS 99 percent of the time... I think it's cause when I play RPGs I finish them as fast as I can and stop playing them.
Strategy games!
I'm somewhat surprised this genre was left out, although I know its not many people's favorite.
I'm not talking about shallow C&C RTS clones either...I'm talking real strategy like Sid Meier's Civil War series, Civ 3 and Combat Mission. When there is a real element of strategy and thought that goes into the game, then its insanely addictive to me.
RPGs... more specifically... japanese console RPGs... more specifically... squaresoft titles :D

Hence the name. RPG's all the way man. Diablo started the addiction, then further enticed by Diablo 2, BG 2, BG 2: SoA, NWN and soon enough, probably Divine Divinity and Lionheart :)
Just a note: Diablo is not RPG.
Action/Statedgy hybrid's...R6, Splinter Cell etc etc

To me an RPG is any game that the main character (or whatever character one is playing) can be altered in a number of ways to be more effective in whatever that character does.
well diablo 2 was like crack cocaine to me
and ide still be playin it if not for all the hackers
im waiting for everquest 2
Diablo 2 is the computer version of heroin I swear it
Back on topic
Lionheart seems pretty cool

Calling a game "Action/RPG" is like saying your pet is a Cat/Dog. It's either one or the other, not both. I really don't know where the trend started but only an ***** who has no clue what a RPG is would invent that.Quote:

Nothing personal, you just sound seriously misinformed on the subject, which is not your fault - rather the media is.
That's the line of thought that led games like Duke Nukem 3D to be called RPG some years ago (true but sad story). Only because "you play the role of Duke", "you can change weapons" and "you can choose different paths", etc.Quote:

God, when will people learn...
What really annoys me is how the so-called "professional" reviewers feed this crap and then turn the current generation of gamers into... ah, whatever.
I found it interesting that the thread starter made 2 different categories for RPGs and MMORPGs. I voted for RPGs because those were the first types of computer games I played and are still the ones that hold my interest the most. Although DII-LOD has been the most addicting (I know it's not an RPG.)
I waited and waited for Wiz 8 to come out and when it finally did, it was a letdown. The graphics were dated and I dislike the combat system. It seems RPGs are fading with most games coming out that really grab the public's attention being MMORPGs or FPS's.
I've tried several different MMORPGs, having played Dragon's Gate and Dragon Realms the longest. DG has been the best MMORPG I've played due to its strict adherence to RP; but lost its charm for me when it got too political - the people in charge were starting to require you to RP a certain way - and if it wasn't their way, then you got on the highway. DR was great for a while - lot's of quests and easy to get customized items, but I got tired of continuously leveling with no RP in sight unless people knew a game mod was around.
Ok Saga, the first RPG games were board games so quit your bickering. RPG is a VERY diverse genre and almost any game can be called an RPG in some sense. All the action part brings up is a more exciting and interactive fight style for instance. I'd consider turn-based fighting and leveling such as the Final Fantasy series to be an RPG. Meanwhile something like Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter to be an action/RPG.
Anywho, I had to vote for action games. I think FPS would fit in there :)
BTW: Wouldn't Figure Skating fit under Sports games?
I like good old FPS's. MOHAA, JKII, BF1942 and Quake 3 to name a few. I play a few RPG's from time to time.
That's not enough. An RGP is a game where you are the one who choose your path and where your decisions will influence your actions to come.Quote:

Are: Fallout (1 and 2), Baldurs Gate(1, 2, expensions), Planescape Torment, Neverwinter nights, Morrowind...
Are not: Diablo, Diablo 2, Dongeon Siege...
Action RPG's (Final Fantasy)
Combat Racers (Wipeout)
Smart-guy FPS's (Shogo)
Sneakers (Thief)
SOME RTS's (Total Annihilation)
'Mech Sims (Armored Core)
My preference is rather amorphous.
[EDIT]To me, Action RPG's are RPG's that don't bore the hell out of me with D&D-related stuff, and you can still enhance you're character with stats. Y'know, like most Japanese RPG's.[/EDIT]
Turn based strategy (Civ, MoO (I&2), SMAC, etc)
Yeah, I know I forgot strategy games<knocks head>
I had just got finished playing an hour long session of Dodonpachi so my mind was kind of squirrly. lol:p
*edit* I pm'd wurm to add strategy so hopefully he can or will.
FPS! Actually MMORPG FPS' *cough*Planetside rules*cough*
It's not that simple, I'm afraid. The point is that TRUE RPG's were born out of Strategy/Wargames. They're an "evolution" of the Strategy genre, where the focus becomes the human element of each "unit" instead of simply its battle prowess. Turning that into a hack n slash (or any Action variant) and you literally change the genre outright. As I said, Action/RPG is an oxymoron, to say the least.Quote:

And I ain't bickering... I'm just tired. Tired of seeing this trend getting out of control. It can't be helped... the media claims that game X is a RPG and everyone who reads their reviews is like "well, he's the pro so if he says so it must be right".
Fallout was the closest a computer RPG ever got to a real RPG but, alas, that wasn't enough to settle to genre for the uneducated masses.
As far as Diablo II is concerned, the people at Blizzard are much to blame for it being classified as a RPG.Quote:

During the D2 beta, project leader Max Schaefer came on the diablo newsgroup to address our concerns about lack of protection
from PK's. His stance on that was that PKs were a viable part of the Diablo community and declaring hostile in town only, was adequate protection, while we wanted the option of a friendly only game. Needless to say, we wern't able to persuade him otherwise.
During this conversation I made reference as to why he kept refering to Diablo as an RPG when in fact it wasen't. He got very defensive and said if it wasen't a RPG then why was diablo named RPG of the year by several sites and that D2 is a RPG as well.
I think the main problem is that at the time, Diablo did not have a clear genre to be classified as, and many sites put it into the RPG group because you could choose multiple character types. Blizzard wanted that, RPG Game of the year, and all the perks that come with it.
If they want to call it a RPG, suits me. But it's not.
What is Shogo? Is it recent?Quote:

VERY OLD game, about 5 years old. It's also a terrible pain in the posterior trying to get it to run perfectly in XP.Quote:
