Kenwood HTB-503 w/upgraded center (KVS-54)..two mains, two surrounds, and a subwoofer. The receiver has CD/DVD optical in, as well as numerous RCAs..what's the best way to connect it to my TBSC for DVDs?

well it depends...
I personally would go digital, but it sounds as though your reciever doesnt have a Coax digital IN, otherwise you would have to do 6 speaker analog which it should do.
But that kinda precludes you from using Multimedia speakers, unless you wanna use a Y splitter.
Hmm...I really don't want to buy another sound card..but if I have to, I might. Would probably be cheaper to buy a DVD player..but I'd kinda like to use a HT setup for games :D
Is there anything that would work better than my TBSC? I bought this because I thought it was fairly high end as far as sound quality & sound cards go..
well I dont know exactly what your reciever looks like as far as connection go, but there should be no need to buy a new soundcard. Sink $20 in cables to hookum up, or spend $100 on a DVD player.
There really is no point in getting a new sound card over it.
The receiver has tons of stuff..as soon as my batteries for the digital camera come in, I can get a pic.
just hook the front left/right, rear left/right, center and sub channels from your TBSC to your respective inputs on the reciever. You'll need 3 mini->dual RCA cables.Quote:
The VR-407 may be an economically priced receiver, but it sports some useful extras for the budget-minded consumer. Not only does it offer the option of DTS decoding, but it also has S-video switching and a six-channel audio input for any future formats such as multichannel DVD-A or SACD. It has two coaxial and two TosLink optical inputs for receiving signals from digital sources that are preassigned to particular sources/inputs.
Done..but the center & sub don't work. Ideas? Do I need a splitter and two mono cables? The out on my TBSC is center/sub in one..and the receiver has two separate inputs.Quote:

that's because if you look at a standard miniplug, it's got two contacts, tow channels. One is left, one is right. Or in your case, one is sub, one is center. I'd suggest swapping the center/sub RCA plugs on the back of your receiver.
(plug what is currently in your sub input into the center, and what is in the center, into the sub)
see if that fixes things.
Already tried that...still get no sound from either. I'll try a DVD next..maybe Windows doesn't like outputting 5.1 normally..Quote:

Also see if the center/sub jack on the soundcard has different modes. On my SBLive5.1, it can either be the center/sub or a digital out port depending on how it's configured.
Why not just set the sound card's VersaJack for digital out, and get the appropriate cable to run that to the receiver's coax digital input?Quote:

I was wondering if that digital out would do 5.1..Quote:

If I select 6 channel (5.1), the versajack goes to analog out..as center/sub. If I set it to digital out, it goes to 4.1..if I set it to 5.1 under digital, it goes back to analog. Argh. Any ideas?
If it's set to digital out, it should be passing a Dolby Digital stream to your receiver, which would decode that single digital stream into 5.1. Maybe the 4.1 setting is referring to how the card's other outputs are set while you're sending digital out? The card might be putting out 4.1 analog and a 5.1 digital stream. (I'm just speculating since I don't have the card, but it would be easy enough to test -- just look to see what type of signal your receiver recognizes on the coax input.)
I believe the card should put out both a digital stream (if you select 'digital out' for the versajack in the control panel) and 4.1 analog. If you also select '4.1' in the CP.
The Santa Cruz doesn't do 5.1 for games... it does a wierd (sucky) virtual 5.1... it is, at most, a true 4.1 gaming sound card, and a 5.1 dvd card.
I wasn't even getting 5.1 on DVD, though...Quote:

?
Well... Does your reciever have 6 channel analog inputs?

You should be able to use the digital connection for dvd's (just get a coax connector...) or you could use three stereo y-splitters for analog 5.1 (the dvd 6 chan input). I would suggest making sure your santa cruz drivers are updated and you have a modern version of WinDVD or PowerDVD. Do you have these things?
I have whatever drivers came on the TBSC CD, and whatever version of PowerDVD that came with my Lite-On DVD drive. The TBSC has center & sub on one channel out, and it's two inputs on the receiver..which color goes to which (white to sub, red to center..or vice versa)?Quote:

(from http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/acc/38frh/usage.htm
Section "Channel Assignments in 6 Speaker Mode")
Channel 5
Center Channel
VersaJack Line Out, tip conductor
Channel 6
Subwoofer Channel (LFE)
VersaJack Line Out, ring conductor
(and from section "External Connectors")
Red is for right/ring
Black is for left/tip
And for your case, the red is the important one.
Summary: red = sub, white = center
You should download the latest drivers... they are worth it! :)Quote:
