My new rig, thx to sharky and newegg!

I just want to thank everyone for all the advice I have gotten here at this board. Lots o nice peeps here, and I just have to say this is the most helpfull pub board I have ever posted on! I am building my rig based mostly on info I found here and from replies to questions I had, not to mention I found out about newegg which just rocks! This is my third and BEST(its not done yet, but I know its gonna smoke :D) rig I have ever built. I can't wait till the last of my parts come in on friday!!!!! Thx everyone!

Edit: Btw, doesnt everyone here hate waiting for ordered parts!!!! God the anticipation is killing me lol !

Ok, got everything put together and working (for the most part, couple minor issues....)!!!! Well I was gonna wait a while before I started OC'ing, but I just got so damn curious hehe! I already have my 2500 clocked at 2.21ghz with a 402fsb without tweaking any voltage settings. I dont know much about OC, im such a noob, but this is pretty exciting for me :D

couple of questions:
1.Im under the impression that the only thing I have to worry about when OC for the most part is cpu temp? When in idle and overclocked at 2.21ghz its at about 41-43c, and when running prime95 torture test it tops out at around 47-48c. Are these temps reasonable?
Edit: im not running my fan at full speed, im leaving it around 4k rpm cause it gets way to loud over that speed.

2. I found out my kingston hx is rated cl2 only up to 167fsb (334mhz) and drops to 2.5 when its pushed up to 400mhz (wish I would have known that before hand. I would have bought the 2-2-2 set...So anyhow I have it running in "aggresive". Its at 2.5-3-3-8 i think. As far as OC'ing, I dont need to OC my ram unless I want to go over 3200+ spec's right?

btw, just checked my 3dmark01 and it came in at 11,442....is that decent for my rig? I have seen much higher scores, but they have been on 9800 pros and what not........I'm not aiming for the ULTIMATE rig, I just want to optimize this one....any suggestions

Here's my $0.02 worth :o , wait for others smarter for a more definitive analysis :

1. Your temps do not look right, point of fact, I think it's a little too warm. I'd suggest you max out the speed of your Smart fan (BUT I understand your aversion to fan noise as I've got Tt Spark 7 - darn LOUD mutha!:mad: ) My Barton runs at 36-38C idle and 43-46C max in a non a/c environment.:) BUT with a/c, it's running at 'bout 30-31C idle and 40-41C maxed OCed at 2475mhz. Although I do believe that the 2800+ runs a little cooler than its 'younger' sibling.;) Does your case allow for good airflow? I've got a Tt Xaser IIa with 3 intake fans and 2 exhaust fans to help airflow which helps quite abit in keeping temps down.

2. You're already OCing your ram when you'd pushed it up to 402mhz. Your FSB at this setting is 201mhz FSB, whereas the rated speed of your ram is 166x2=333mhz.;) Nice OC, btw. So you've already OCed your ram, now play with the ram timing, although I don't expect that you can run agressive timing as your ram might just have a problem with that.;)

Guys, IF I'm wrong, please point it out to me as I still learning the ropes and I AM always willing to listen.:)

Mikeysg is correct about the exhaust fans. Your temps aren't dangerous but see if you canget the idle down a little. I use 5 panaflo fans; 2 intake, 1 side intake 2 exhaust. The 2 exhaust are the super output panaflos and the other 3 are high output. All are controlled by by Nexus fan controller-sorry Sunbeam boys- Oh,Oh was that a flame I just saw???:D

Those 3dmark scores do seem kind of low too. On my friends 1800+ palamino at stock speeds, with pc2100 ram and a 128 mb 4200 he can score over 10000. I don't think he did any overclocking to get that so you should be able to tweak your score higher for sure.

I didn't think about that, a 2500+ Barton and a 9500Pro should getcha more than 13k easy, I think, check your Control Panel and slide D3D setting (or something like that) to performance/hi performance and not at quality. Be sure that AA/AF is off and run the test again.;) :)

Your temps are ok. a tad high but not very high. As for your 2k1 score, did you install lastest NF2 drivers, and the 3.6cats for your 9500pro.

I'm building almost the same rig as you, only I'm using an A7N8X Deluxe mobo instead and only one stick of 512mb so i can double it later on.

Also, is that hard drive an 8mb cache 7200rpm? I got myself a maxtor 120gb 8mb 7200.

Yes its a 7200rpm 8mb, however I have all my software and OS running off of my 5400rpm maxtor. The reason being I need to change some partitions on my newer drive and backup all my mp3's and software I have on it before I install my OS on the faster drive.

Ok, now just to let you guys know, I am currently running my system out of my old case, and the cover is not on. So im assuming that the two pos case fans I have in it aren't doing any good. I have already ordered an antec full tower case and the fans to go with it(two exhaust in the back and one intake in the front). Once I have everything installed in my new case, should it drop my temps? Meaning, does your case setup make that big of a difference?

Second problem. When running sandra, it says that my current agp data rate is not optimized. I have my agp setting in the bios set to 8x, but when I pull up 3dmark01's system info>motherboard info> agp capabilities, it says 8x(4x enabled). Does this mean my card isnt running in 8x agp??

here is what sandra says when I double click the tip:

"Tip T2525 - Current AGP data rate not optimal, i.e. less than chipset’s maximum AGP data rate. E.g. current AGP data rate is 1x while the chipset and the AGP card both support 2x. You should get better performance with a higher data rate but this depends on the application.
Fix: First, use the PCI & AGP Information module to confirm that the AGP card also supports the maximum chipset data rate. If it does not, don’t worry about it. For non-Intel chipsets, make sure you install the latest version of their AGP mini-drivers. You should update the video card drivers as well. Some non-Intel chipsets can only work in 1x mode with some video cards."

Oh, one thing I need to do is download the newer vga drivers. As far as the nforce drivers, I installed those off the cd-rom I got with the mobo.

Alright, fixed the agp problem. I reinstalled the nforce mobo drivers and its up to par now :)

Now as far as my temps, would the new case help?

I've got a Xaser IIa, there're 3 intake fans and 2 exhaust fans (excluding PSU fans) so they help remove warm air within the case. Don't expect a dramatic fall in temps but it should help bring temp down a little.;) :) What case are you using now?:confused:

well, its a crappy case I bought when I built my first system, and atm the cover is not on so everything is out in the open. Hopefully I should get my new case in by mid next week so I can see if that helps. I have artic silver ceramique on the die, and I would think my heatsink and fan should be enough to do the job.......I dunno why it should be running that hot compaired to other peoples barton 2500......

Have you flashed to the latest bios? I remember when I first got my mobo, the temp reading set off an alarm and I had to shut down :eek: . Turns out to that my bios gave a false temp reading (about +15 C more :eek: ) I had my bios flashed and the temp dropped from around 55C to 40C (this was with my old NF7-S rev1.0 and a pally 2000+ :o ) The bios may be giving an inflated temp reading.:) :)

Yeah Sharky's is awesome. Just don't forget to come back everytime you are thinking of buying something, or if something goes wrong. I knew next to nothing before I came here, now I own a 3PC home network, and all are self built.

Yes the anticipation kills me too, I check the tracking obsessively. Like at least 5 times a day.....;)

Well, I bought my board from excaliburpc and they flashed my bios to the most recent one, 17 i believe it is. I already checked this in sandra. Whenever I get my new case, im gonna try lapping my heatsink and reinstalling it along with a new coat of as ceramique. I hear lapping sometimes will help alot. I noticed when I put my heatsink on, there where 4 indentions in a square slightly bigger than the die. Is that supposed to be there? I just figured that was there to tell me where to apply thermal compound(when you put it on there and then wipe it off to fill the small indentions as per as3 instructions). If anyone has any suggestions, hit me up with a reply, otherwise I will post another topic with my results on my temps with the new case and heatsink installation.
