is it possible to make a network connection to a computer in another home? Right now I have three computers networked together at home and my brother has two. We want to be able to share files between or two networks like its one big network. Anyone have some info on how to do this?
you are going to have to use either FTP (which is wicked security risk) or VPN to pull this one off, I am assumming that these homes are far enough away that running a cable or wireless really aint an option. Therefore VPN is pretty much the last option. To do this, one set of computers has to be set to recieve incomming connections, and the other has to dial into this VPN connection using a username and password that was already set up on the computer on the far end. The thing is, some routers get pretty pissy about allowing VPN's to be dialled out of them. And as for opening the ports that Windowz uses for file sharring... well thats just dumb...
Where do you set up the username and password on the receiving computer?
oh lord this is going to be a huge thread by the time we're done, but lets get to it:)
To set up this account, first thing you want to do is disable the simple file sharring. You can do this if you go into any folder, click tools, select folder options, go to view, and uncheck the last box (this is actually a different thing, but you still are gonna want to do this). Now you want to go to your control pannel and into administrative tools.
-Select computer management, and then Local Users and Groups.
-Right click on users and select "New User"
-Name him
-Give your bros name
-Give a description like "This man likes many women"
-give him a password
-confirm it
-uncheck "user much change..."
-close that window
-double click users
-close all those windows
-click start -> My network places
-click network connections
-click create new connection
-click "set up an advanced connection"
-next
-next
-select Allow Virtual private connections and click next
-put a check next to your log in name and the one you just made
-click next
-click finish

Ok i've got that setup now is there anything you have to setup on the incoming computer. When my bro tried to connect it said tcp/ip cp reported error 733 a connection to the remote computer could not be completed you may need to adjust the protocals on this computer.
Ok we are now connected so now how do we access files on each others computers
u have to share them, did you select them as shared?
yes but do you use windows explorer? Or go through my network places?
tcp/ip still isn't working correct but i installed the ipx and we can connect that way but no sharing.
ok, have you selected some folders as shared by right clicking on the folder, selecting sharring, and clicking share this folder? To be perfectly honost, I am trying to help you with something that I only know the procedure for but dont actually have experience with... Im sorry about that, but I am trying to help
Yeah, we both have shared folders but don't know how to actually access each others. We get the icon in systray showing we are connected but thats it. I would have figured by going into my network places we would be able to see each others computers.
heh... at this point you are out of my league... maybe ua or SkyDog will know... Im not knowlegable enough to answer that question...
You may or may not see the other computer in "Network Neighborhood" or "My Network Places". (Network Neighborhood and the browser service that makes it work are notoriously fickle.) But if you've got a VPN connection established and shares created, you should be able to click Start > Run > \\computername\sharename to get to the shares created on the other computer.
