Yeah I concur - best os I have ever used.
It's still extremely buggy... Granted it's not Windows ME (shutter). I still think Win2k beats it out stability wise. Heck maybe I'm just unlucky with Win XP.. One thing is for sure though the default XP look with everything in the start menu bugs me, I know you can change it but it still bugs. I do like the fact that most, if not all, drivers are installed by the time the install is done. I still wanna slap most M$ operating systems around somtimes, and not installing it fresh after a while stuff magically starts taking dumps. That's enough of my rant.Quote:

XP still has a few issues, some at the feet of MS, and some from the third parties that make the software and hardware. 2K is a lot more mature, and let’s no forget that SP 2 was when 2K came into it’s own. Lets hope that XP sp 2 does the same thing for XP.
2k is the best OS MS has ever made so far as stability.
XP is the best so far as the feature/stability balance goes.
I run XP Pro at home :)
I hated XP Pro. I thought it was unresponsive and slow. I also hate that stupid activation BS!
Get a real OS...get 2K Pro!
XP seemed like it was always running more programs that what I was actually running. I'm glad I switched to 2K and will never go back:D
Sesiously though have you ever wondered what sort of crap these operating systems are running to use up 140 megs... I mean common. Can't they atleast cut down a bit. Just because all the technology exists doesn't mean you have to eat it all up. Don't qoute me on this but I've heard from some friends who have looked at windows source code and said it's garbage. I'd have to talk to them again to find out why but heck I believe them.
All you have to do is look in services to see what's running, and disable what you don't need or want.Quote:

Slowly but surely Linux is coming for you....................AHHHHHHHHH!!!! Seriously I loaded XP when it first came out ran it about 3 weeks tweaked and farted and fumed with it and decided it was time to learn linux. The last thing My XP install did was download Mandrake 8.2 at the time. I have never looked back. I play games and do everything I did in windows and more. I found a really cool dvd ripper/encoder that works great. AND ITS ALL FREE!!!!. I am now in the process of loading Slackware 9.0 and it is just great. You really should give it a try. Its not hard to learn, especially with great distros like Mandrake, Suse and RedHat for the newbie. I would recommend mandrake as it installs allot more features by default than the others. it takes about a week to learn your way around then you will be license and fee free.
XP Pro volume license doesn't have activation... Mmmmm...Quote:

hehe
XP pro is my fav OS
XP Pro=best
2k is alright but getting drivers on it is a pain in the *** sometimes.
Learn the ins and outs of 2000 Pro and it blows XP out of the water....although I DO like the fact that XP Pro has that built in firewall....
I still havn't encountered a ms os that is worth paying the price they charge. They are all trash. Granted, they are pretty easy to use trash, but the core of windows is trash none the less. Just think if a corporation as big and powerful as microsoft were developing posix compiliant oses for people to use. It would have everything xp has as far as ease of use goes, but it just wouldn't suck. Wait, I'm talking about apple, too bad apple doesn't develop for x86 platforms.... yet.
I don’t think Windows XP is the based OS that MS has to offer... I do like Windows 2000 much more...
But I haven’t experienced any problems with either Windows 2000 or XP... They are both extremely stable, but the activation is BS.. Thank god I don’t have to activate it :D ;)
I do like Linux a lot as well... Linux is by far the most stable OS if done correctly... I have had a Linux server online for over a year before I rebooted it... Now that was the longest running server I had ever had!!! Well I had some Novell that was close :D
I hate the feel and style of the default XP theme... That is always the first thing to go after install XP.. The XP start menu is ugly! The desktop colors are ugly! I just switch it over the Windows Classic and it works great!
I had to support a Macintosh a mainly used Macintosh office a few years ago.. Well quite a few years ago.. Pre OS X... And back then MS only had NT 3.51 and Windows 95 (not sure about 98)... Now back then Macintosh has the most stable OS.. Even though it did crash often :D Now that MS had resolved a lot of their problems.. I feel that Windows XP or 2000 is by far superior to the Macintosh OS in stability... I know nobody asked... Just a statement :)
Sadly now I have a client that I need to support with OS 9 and OS 10... crappy!
I do feel that (sadly) that MS is better for the population then Linux... Linux doesn’t really offer a decent support route (nor does MS with their OEM products :D) Also Windows is a lot more compatible with older and newer hardware then Linux will ever be...
Linux is harder to use then MS.. And it doesn’t matter what flavor..
I think win2k was the most stable and best operating system ever made by MS.
i dont like win xp, its still buggy and uses up lotta resources...too many resources are wasted in bubbly icons and funky themes.
I admit that out of the box XP is very bloated.. But I tweak the OS down to 68MB at bootup... Nice and clean :)Quote:

same here!!...u cant tell if its 2k on xp unless u click on start menu :)
yeah col, that use friendliness is like the ultimate goal I'd say. ms needs to make a posix compliant os, but they are too greedy. dam them!
53MB here :DQuote:

I tweaked it like nuts....its SOOO fast...
2K is the best once its tweaked, but I do like some of the extra features of XP...
Even with both Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines tweaked for performance, Windows XP in my experience will still use about 4 or 5MB more RAM than Windows 2000. That's nit-picky you could say, but if I don't need it, I'm not going to load it.
I use Windows 2000 for my main desktop, and Windows XP for my laptop for ease of use when I am tired of tweaking and just want to "cut back and relax."
Well I do load some things :)Quote:

But when I drop my 3DMark drive in... I am below 40MB at bootup!!!!
Now that is amazing.. But not very functional since most is disabled in the services :D
LOL :)
Yeah, I had my 2K Kernel tweaked to where it was like...45MB and it was fast....but yeah, I could barely do anything....
I have to agree with the thread starter. I had 2K pro, and installed xp, coz i thought it would make a good upgrade, and it slowed down my comp no end. 2k runs fine though, and it has almost all of the stability, although it doesn't look quite as pretty.
It wasn't much of a loss, since my copy of xp um.... fell off the back of a truck. Seriously though, if you get fed up with the activation stuff there are plenty of programs that bypass it, and if you purchase a genuine copy anyway, its not illegal, and there's no reason to feel guilty.
Although... when it comes down to small kernals, linux wins hands down. I had a vector linux distro running [with a couple of apps, although no x] for only 30mb's!
