Is It Just Me Or Is NVIDIA's A.A. Far More Superior Than ATI's A.A.???

Whats up Sharkys! I recently just switched from an NVIDIA Geforce3 Ti200 to an ATI Radeon 9600 256mb. I like to run my games on ultra high picture quality. I often like to max out my settings such as, anistropic filtering, anti aliasing, and texture sharpening.

When I had my GeForce3, I maxed out all these settings. I'm more specifically talking about the Anti-Aliasing. I did the same as soon as I switched over to the Radeon. Now... The issue here is... With the GeForce3 at 4xAA and the Radeon at 6xAA, it seems to me that the picture is far more clear with the GeForce3. With the GeForce3, the edges were as smooth as butter. But with my new Radeon, I can still see the Jaggies! Is there something wrong with my settings or does ATI's AA just suck or something.

I might also add that I've been unable to install the Catalyst 3.6 drivers! I don't know whats wrong but when ever I install the Cat3.6 drivers my OS won't fully boot. I don't know whats wrong. However, I highly doubt that this is the main reason why the game is a lot more jaggie. Anybody have any opinions or solutions?

you need drivers (cats) to enable many functions like fsaa

Those screenshots are useless to this thread. The FX's use a different FSAA algorithm than the Pre-GF4's if I recall correctly. I think the GF3 used Super Sampling instead of the multisampling that new GeForces/Radeons use. Super Sampling is better than Multi Sampling that would be why the GF3 looked better. If I'm incorrect, feel free to correct me.

GF2 = Super Sampling
GF3 = Quincunx

r8500 = Super Sampling

FX/r9xxx = Multi Sampling

2xFSAA = Super Sampling
4XFSAA = Super Sampling
Quincunx AA = Multi Sampling

I am almost positive GF3's used Super Sampling for normal FSAA modes.

EDIT: Just did a little research, and I stand corrected. The GF3 Uses Multi Sampling for all modes. Sorry 'bout that. :)

Very weird.

Basic question, did you install the driver then the Cat's Control Panel?

and AA4x should be fine since you will not have a high FPS drop.

I'm no ATI fanboy, I buy whatever is the best available card at the time of my purchase. I've had several cards from both card makers, and I think it's just you.

Try knocking down you AA setting and bump up the AF as high as your performance will allow. Does wonders for the clarity when running AA. (try 2x AA, 8x AF)

No, I think you mean Super Sampling. Even the GF4 AA modes are SS except for Quincunx, which a MS mode AA. As far as I know, the GF3 is SS AA only.

SS AA does provide a better AA quality overall, but at a performance hit that quite substantial.

According to this article, the Geforce3 used multisampling. Quincunx was actually a form of supersampling.

Jebus Christ, that looks nice. I don't know whats wrong with mine. Whenever I install Cat3.6 drivers it doesn't work.

Oooooooooh I see. That big of a difference huh? Anybody have any screen shots from an ATI Radeon 9600 at 6xAA?

Well... I just downloaded the whole package thing from ATI's website. Should I install it separately?

I think I'd rather run it at 6xAA. I'd rather sacrefice the 50 Frames Per Second to achieve better picture quality considering the fact that the human eye can only see upto 72 frames per second. No point in having 250 frames. :::shrug:::

Well.... I already have it at 8xAF adn 6xAA. Knocking down AA to 2x will make things better? Are you sure?

Yeah the G3 does have Quincunx. The levels were as follows:

Antai Aliasing Off
2x Anti Aliasing
Quincunx
4x Anti Aliasing

I remember this clearly as I just had this card a couple of weeks ago. The Quincunx was designed to give a decent Anti Aliasing Quality without the loss to too many frames. So I wouldn't be surprised if Quincunx is Multi-Sampling while the others were Ssuper-Sampling.

For some reason the AA (or AF for that matter) isn't being applied. I'd do a COMPLETE re-install of the vid card. First clean out ALL video related stuffs, then reinstall the whole thing.

Open the shortcut you use to launch the game and add "-bpp 32" to the command line; without the quotation marks of course.

Make sure you don't have "application preference" turned on.

Also, you upgraded, right? Did you switch to standard VGA and remove all of the Nvidia drivers BEFORE you installed the ATI drivers?

Give what Un4given a try. There were some problems early in the R3xx lifetime that had problems with 16Bit AA. This might be the case as Half-Life without the -32bpp will run at 16bit.

Missed that. No knocking it down will only hurt IQ.
