I'm looking for a 19" LCD that would work for some gaming. My current 19" Sony Trinitron (420GS) is around 6 years old and doesn't like me. I can't see anything on dark backgrounds in video games and that makes me mad.
I've seen plenty of 19" LCDs with 25ms response times, but is that good enough? I know of the 16ms 17" LCDs, but I think I want something bigger than 17. Does anyone have any suggestions?
i might check out the samsung 191T, but why not just get a really nice CRT? having owned an LCD for about 6 mos. i wouldn't recommend them for anything but general computing and text (for which they are great, however). they suck for anything but light gaming, imo, and the colors just aren't as vibrant as a CRT, esp. trinitron. you could either save some cash, or else get an even bigger screen (e.g., 21" CRT) for probably around the same.

My biggest beef with 19" LCDs is their 1280x1024 resolution. At that size they really should be 1600x1200 if you ask me. The Dell 20" comes in at that and is somewhat affordable, but personally I want to wait for a LCD that does 1600x1200 natively and has a sub 25ms refresh rate before upgrading. I'd stick with the 17" with an extra low refresh rate if you plan on gaming, you're only losing an inch going from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD.

I've got a question.
If the native resolution is 1280x1024, I know you don't have to run it at that but how much worse would the image quality be.
For example, I like to play my games with 4xAA and 16xAF on. With the newer games like halflife 2 i'm afraid that I wont be able to run at those settings with the 1280x1024 resolution. So I'll probably end up playing at 1024x768. If I buy a Sammy 191t or something how much worse will it look at 1024 compared to 1280?

When I was using my 171T the scaling was pretty good when I took it down to 1024*768. Apparently this differs by manufacturer though. Overall, performance in gaming and contrast between darks sucked, but it was great to program, write, etc, on. I agree with the people saying now ain't the time if you plan on gaming at all, CRT's just perform much better.
Ok, as you hve noted, most the affordable 19 inch monitors have the 25ms response time. If your eyesight is any good at all, you will notice a "ghosting" or after image effect with the 25ms response times. This is not good for first person shooters. The 17ms seem better ( if you can find them.) But the 17ms lcd has to give up some brightness ( 30% +/-) to hit that level of performance. Darker monitors are also not good for first person shooters.

I agree with both Tom's and Anand, in the fact that the LCD monitor is not yet up to heavy game level. So, save some dough and buy a good 21 or mebbe 22 inch CRT monitor and frag away.
This is kinda random but here it goes:
Ive been looking for a TV since I just got my own apt. Been looking at HDTVs and such. Of course I can only afford Direct View tubes so Im looking at 27-30" tvs. But when you brought up LCDs and prices that made me think about Presentation monitors, like Monivision. For the price of a 19" LCD you could easily get a 30" wide screen HDTV that can do 1280x720@60hz.... These just have DVI in so why not treat yourself to one of those rather than something a fraction of the size and is made to only view text?!?! hehehe Yeah I know an LCD will fit in a bathroom and a 30" needs a bedroom. Just a thought though if you have the room. I just think playing HL2 on a 30"+ HDTV at high res would be quite awesome

Thanks for the comments. I just got back from the computer lab, had to pull an all nighter to finish an ECE project, that was no fun. I'm not going to buy another CRT unless this one actually dies. I'll be leaving college at the beginning of this next summer and don't want another huge CRT to move around with me.
Just get the 2000FP form Dell (rebadged BenQ) - it's 1600x1200, has DVI, S-video, component, pip, runs at 25ms but is 20.1 inches and it's now down to $719 - I haven't met one single person who's not happy with it... and they used to pay twice as much.
Edit: if you choose a 1280x1024 LCD you'll get screwed up height/width ratios in games and movies for the rest of its life - don't do it.
I have a Dell 1901FP with the 1280x1024 resolution. It is not bad, but unbearable for gaming. Too much streaking and ghosting. Plus the dot pitch is .29, which should be much smaller. This puppy is going back to Dell and i'm going back to 'ol faithful - a fat *** 21" CRT. Who needs deskspace anyway?
I was in the same shoes, with the added constraint that I did not want to cough up $700-$800 for a monitor (LCD or not)....I wanted a kick butt monitor for both gaming, photoshop, browsing, etc....
AFter all was said and done, I would recommend the following:
1. 21" CRT (several to choose from here).
Pros: big, high-res (at least 1600x1200), etc, excellent coloring, great for gaming, etc, $500 range
cons: bulky, heavy!
2. 17" viewsonic VP171B LCD
Pros: 16ms, 500:1, pivot screen, 1 DVI, 2 anal, 1 USB, AWESOME colors!
cons: only 1280x1024 (good enough for gaming, not as good for photoshop, etc)$490
I bought this one!! after seeing several 19" CRT's and other 19-17 LCDs, this was the BEST investment thus far....simply the best 17" LCD out there, bar-none! :cool: :eek:
3. 20" LCD from DELL
Pros: 1600x1200, big res, good color performance, 25ms (ok for gaming, but nothing like the vp171b), DVI+analog, etc
cons: PRICEY! ($800).
So, really, if price not an issue and you don't do hardcore gaming, the dell 20"LCD is prolly a good choice for you.....if you don't mind having a bulky CRT, then a good 21" CRT is the best!.....BUT, if price is an issue, and you want the best LCD for gaming + photoshopping, etc, then nothing comes close the vp171; your only fall there is 17" and a 1280x1024 res.
Thanks ;) I do enough gaming to make it the biggest factor in the monitor I purchase, so I'm probably going to wait. I definitely gave the 17" LCD's with 16ms response times some thought, but I can't go from an 18" viewable CRT to a 17" LCD, if anything I wanted to go up! If nothing comes out in 8 months (I hope something does) then I might just get one.Quote:

Oh, some things will likely come within 8 months. Sharp's just released a 20" LCD with a 16ms response rate in Japan, while LG appears to have completed work (or at least is near completion) on the panel for 23" LCDs at 16ms. However, when these technologies will show over here is anyone's guess...I'd think within 8 months or so though...
I dunno. I'm using a 19" trinitron CRT and looking at all those 17" LCD's ain't too bad. The 18" actually seems larger, but maybe that's just cause the casing's smaller or something. But IMO, there are several really nice 18" that cost a heck of a lot less than a 19" for just that 1" more.

18" may be larger, in fact, because LCDs are measured in viewable size, while CRTs aren't. So your 19" CRT may have slightly less (or the same) viewable space as the LCD does.
Yea that's true. At work someone got an 1800FP (18" dell LCD) and they used to have a 19" Dell P992 (Trinitron) and they measured to see the size difference, and they said the LCD was like .1" bigger or something.Quote:

since we're on the subject...i do mainly watching anime and dvds on my comp...i have a viewsonic GS790 which i love..but im in a dorm and im limited on space...how come nobody talks about the 20" apple cinema display...it looks amazing..anybody know how it handles games/movies?
20" apple cinema display...Is an awsome LCD monitor...It does everything since apple now tends to go LCD and trying to pahse out CRT's.
Ive seen one on CompUSA, it does games, play movies...Keep in mind that this LCD's are dessigned for professional users.

i got a 900nf, i like it a lot. Just got the 17" 16ms hitachi lcd for home, i forgot the model name. Anyway, my bro still plays quake 1 clan arena,haha. anyway, it's a very fast moving game, and it ghosts, and he hates it. I still don't like lcd's as much as crt's. Not saying i hate them, i just prefer crt. You kinda have to try one out and get a feel to see if you will like them and see how much you notice ghosting and to see if you like the lcd.
problem is...cant try it if you don't know anyone who has it...
