C'mon guys, give me the headsup on thin flat panels puhleaz...?:D
I am a huge fan of my Hitachi 17" LCD. The pixel response at 16ms (at least in March) was one of the best, if not the best for LCDs.

I have used IBM and Compaq LCDs at work, but my Hitachi blows em away. Its a sweet look mounted on a swivel arm in my Study at home.
yeah it seems like the constrains of college dorms will force me to start using a flat panel

The problem is, there really isn't any decided winner. Even the reviews on Tom's seem to contradict themselves. However, with that said, here's the general comment:
There are currently about 3 actual panels used to make all 17" LCDs with a sub-25ms response rate. One, made by AU Optronics, boasts a 16ms response rate (the Hitachi is one of them), but it gets this by dithering (dropping colors). The second seems to possibly be the Samsung 172X's panel, which may or may not use the AUO monitor but it certainly dithers as well (stay tuned for the 173P for a true 17" 16ms panel). The last is a crop of 20ms panels (not certain as to the manufacturer), which Tom's included in a review a while back (I'd check that out). The 20ms seem to be the best compromise between gaming and colors.
Of course, if you can, go ahead and grab a friend who games who has a 25ms monitor. Stare at it. Play with it. Especially play games with dark scenes. If the ghosting doesn't bother you, there's a whole host of panels that are then available to you for the useage.
It's my understanding that all the 16ns 17" LCD displays are made by the same company. With that in mind the most popular models are the Hitachi, Viewsonic and Samsung. I'm still waiting for the 16ns OLED 19" models to come out. I might be out of luck for the remainder of the decade.
16ms LCD Screens are all made by the same company.
If your just going to use the LCD for gamming, by all means get a 16ms LCD...even though it sacrifices color depth you wont realy notice it since your vieweing a fast video.
If you use Photoshop or Pinacle Video editing Go for a 50ms LCD's since they give the best picture detial.
If you want to do both, go for 25-30ms LCD's. NEC Mitsubishi makes good balanced LCD's and even though they rate 30ms they do not ghost...I know since I have a Mitsubishi NX86LCD...I compared it to Samsungs 191T 25ms and samsung had more ghosting:eek:

Any word on LG's panels? I'm looking at their 23" FLATRON L2320A because it looks "better" than the 240T from Samsung.
Thanks for the tip on the 173P...Quote:

Video editing doesn't interest me, I'm all about 1st person shooters,RPG'S and the normal everyday office/web design type work.
Thanks for the info on the Mitsubishi.
I've not had any experience with LG'S panels but I have with their CRT'S and it's been all good! ;)Quote:

Not familiar with the 2320A. They DO have a paper monitor on their website, that's 23"/16ms (LM230W02), but it's not out yet. Also, Samsung is releasing a new monitor, the 243T, not certain on the specs.
I've seen my LCD (Viewsonic VP171b) side by side with the Hitachi and it just was impressively better! I also contacted Viewsonic and asked about the screen and it is NOT made by AU Optronics and does NOT dither colors.
Seriously, this has been the best part of my investment, and I have yet to find an LCD that looks better. Here are some of the specs:
16ms resp
500:1 contrast
swivel screen
1280x1024 native (max)
DVI, 2 analog, 1 USB I/O
You should see how quake3 and UT2003 look in this thing....UNREAL!!!
Is this monitor replacing a 19" CRT? If so, how does it compare screen size wise and quality wise?Quote:

dunno what you are refering to, but it didn't replace anything...brand new system for my house. My old Athlon 800mhz PC from 3 years ago was given to my dad last year, and I just used the one at work until I put this system together for my house.Quote:

hope that helps.
I didn't know it was part of a new system. I was interested in what you thought of it compared to CRT monitors.
I had it side by side with a friend's CRT a week ago (testing the dual monitor setting of my 9800) and it's not even close! As a matter of fact, the LCD seems "too bright" almost-- colors are just that vivid.Quote:

CRT was a 19", and the screen size was not bigger by much.
Thanks for the info. I've been thinking about making my PC totally LAN worthy. It's already got the Lanboy case. Now I just need to shed some monitor weight. :)
what about 19" lcds?..i watch alot of movies and stuff..also do some gfx work and possibly play some 1st shooters...how does that apple 20" cinema display compare to some others?
The problem with LCD screens over 17" is that they "refresh" at around 25ns. That translates into 45FPS and there is noticable ghosting. The newer 17" ones "refresh" around 16ns, which is comparable to 60FPS and there is less ghosting. Generally, there is less color fidelity and a smaller viewing angle with the 17" though. The technology still hasn't been perfected. But if it is close, I might end up getting one for their portability, and the fact that they are easier on ones eyes.Quote:

I used to have an Apple 17" FP display, and loved it but had to sell it with the G4/933 I had.
Lately I've picked up this BenQ 17" FP767. It's been great on games - with its 16ms pixel speed I don't notice any "ghosting", and it's bright as can be (sometimes too bright and I have to turn it down).
Color rendition is fine for my purposes, I'm not using it for precise photo reproduction. And it's MUCH easier on the eyes that any CRT.
I'm never going back to conventional CRT's - that's for sure.
what about the Planar PX191? or that other planar thats a little cheaper?
They have really good specs and i can get the 19" cheaper planar for like $520 from dell...
