whats wrong with your ps2?
There is an article floating around somewhere. Apparently there are some printed fliers from bestbuy (november ones) saying that the PS2 = 99.99
There is a heated debate on it in some of the other forums I have visited. Apparently, Microsoft has matched every single PS2 price drop. If this turns out to be true however, I fell Mr.Gates will have a heart attack.
Seriously, Microsoft has deep pockets and all but cutting their XBOX price to 99.99 is going to HURT them BAD. I don't care how deep your pockets are.
On a side note. Sine Gamecube price was cut to 99.99 their sales rose to over 400%. But I guess a lot has gone into advertising the damn thing. I see a commercial for that damn Gamecube every 20 min on most channels.
Often twice in a row too :eek:Quote:

I remember when Tribes 2 fried my GF3. Seriously that game was so horrible when it came out. I returned the game immediately. I think its better now with all the patches. O well
But yea. I totally fried my Visiontek GF3 and that was the best card out at the time. That was nuts. I was running on medium detail 800x600 and it was STILL choppy. Geez. Ah good memories.
Well actually there were BAD.
PEPSI COLA RULES ....
Um...ok? :oQuote:

Back to the topic, i found this:

I found the following pretty interesting...
Maybe that will actually help the reliablity of PS2's, since i know a lot of the problematic ones now are due to heat.Quote:
But why would Sony do such a thing if they're still making money from the amount of PS2s sold? Two hints of things to come: Bloomberg has reported that in the first six months of this current fiscal year, Sony has sold a third less PS2s than compared to the year previous (in Japan only), from 1,620,239 units to 1,085,560 units. Also, Sony has announced intentions to begin manufacturing a new 90nm chip for the PS2 this month, lowering the overall manufacturing cost of the console and possibly allowing the company to lower the price of the unit and still make a profit.
I heard that the price drop would be in jan 2004. I hopes it's christmas, because if it is that'll be on my list along with all the smash hits for hit(well not all, lol).:)
Nice link, sorry for off topic. Got carried away.
That game is crap anyway... but seriously, what happened? I've had extensive experience inside PS2s, I might be able to help.Quote:

Well I know people that have f'd up 3 PS2's because of the modchips they used lol. I think $99 is a reasonable price to start considering buying a PS2. I will try to modchip it out too even though I wouldnt pirate games for PS2 (no DVD-Burner too much per disc, and too much hassle, F it).
PS2 has some awesome games and my brother-in-law just recently purchased one. Since I am moving in with him I might aswell buy an X-Box instead :\, is it $99 too?
Maybe I'll buy one for the Final Fantasy games. Are they good?
I already have got a PS2, but in general this seems to be a good move for Sony. Reducing prices was always a good thing!:D
i currently have 2 brand new ps2's. sony's customer support is amazing. off of warranty the lazer breaksdown, destroys games and dvds. i call them a few times, i then ship my ps2 out to them and the damaged games, they reimburse me for the retail value of the video games (some 360$) as well as sending me a new ps2. (they had to send me 2 to compensate for both of mine which broke down)
it's a shame their product isnt this good.
on a side note, i bought a mod chip as soon as it came out for the ps2. i unscrewed the ps2. took a look at it. and screwed it back in. i had enough trouble getting the ps1 to work with it. but all the stuff in the ps2 is much smaller. and i dont have the tools to do such fine soldering.
Yes, the soldering points inside of the PS2 are tiny! To avoid damaging the console, you need to:
1. Know what you're doing
2. Have a PS2 v4 or later (preferably v7)
3. NOT HAVE A CRAPPY NO-SOLDER MOD (these things destroy PS2s within hours)
4. Not have a cheap-*** clone or v1 mod
I have modded 4 PS2s myself, all a year ago, each with a real Magic 3.0 or 3.1 further modified with an on/off switch to bypass any possibly modchip detection schemes Sony may come up with in the future. All the PS2s still run perfectly, with the exception of my one friend's, because he thought it would be a cool idea to open up his PS2 and replace the 3.0 with a 3.1 (which is pointless if you have the aformentioned switch) himself with absolutely no soldering experience. Long story short, he kept the iron on the board for FAR too long in a couple points and fried his board.
My point is - Don't blame modchips for screwing up consoles, blame the installer. Unless its your fault for buying a cheap-*** mod, or the horrible no-solder mod.
EDIT: And if your PS2 is v1-4, dont expect those things to last long on their own, the lasers in them are crap.
nah, none of my ps2s have mod chips in them. im not gonna try running my ps2 with it if i install it, with ye old soldering iron.
mine all broke down with the laser. numerous times.
must have been an older model. Try to sell yours and get a v7.
Whoa! $99... thats incredible :D
Id pay that much just for GT4 :)
If Xbox hits $99, I may have to get one. Thx to Nintendo for cutting the sales of PS2 enough for them to lower their prices too. Go Nintendo!!! (BTW, I'm one of the sad victims that had to pay Sony $299 just a few months before they lowered their price to $189.:( )
I'm serious, I must be real damn lucky. I got my PS2 the X-Mas it came out (so I can take a good guess that it's a v.1 or so), and it's been running as good as new ever since then. No breakdowns, no nothing. So has my PS1, and it was the first one ever, too (the one with terrible heat management)Quote:

Hell, I think my DDR hard pads will break before this thing ever will...
So this is real?
I'll have to buy another one since someone "borrowed" mine 2 years ago
And why does using the no soldering mod ruin a PS2? I'm not touching my PS2 with a soldering iron, so the plug and play solution is very tempting.
DONT DO IT!Quote:

Seriously, everyone I know that installed one of those had their PS2 break down within a matter of days. Taking the mod out does NOT fix it, and Sony wont touch it.
My best friend stuck one in, and her PS2 stopped working an hour later.
