Is the only difference the obvious lack of a center channel speaker? I'd assume they use the same speakers in both of the two to save on costs... how about the sub? Is the 5.1 sub more powerful (not talking ultra sub).
Just wondering, klipsch has 4.1 refurbished for $150. Btw how would those compare to the monsoon mh505? Monsoon has nice sound qual, but im almost positive the klipsch would destroy it based on bass.
They are 2 completely different systems (4.1 vs 5.1)
The 5.1s have many of the problems inherent to the 4.1s fixed. The added centerchannel is a bonus for dvds and games :)
The sub is much better. The sats are much improved as well. (midrange/ highs, upper bass extension)
You would definatly notice a difference between the two.
The 5.1 sub is the deepest hitting/flattest sub on the mm market, until the ultra sub came out.
An added bonus: if your PM5.1 dies on you during the warrenty period, they'll replace it with the ULTRAS.:eek: :D
Well thats nice for current owners, but who would really buy the old 5.1s vs ultras since ultras are 30 bucks cheaper :) Guess the 4.1s are no go then.... there even a set of speakers sub-200 bucks that would compete with monsoon mh505? I mean I like my speakers, nothing really wrong with em... but oldest part of my system pretty much now you know you get into that "want to buy something so its newer" mood.

Plenty. some of the logitech series can be had for very cheap(i would not recommend them for fidelity though) If you want bass thrown at you with the accuracy of a BFG, go for z560's or something (ive seen em for like 250 CAD so thats like 190USD???
Megaworks 250D is $159 from creatives site, they offer good quality too, Klipsch 2.1s.... 4.1s....(refurbs@150$) great stuff.

As a side note I noticed your system specs are pretty similar to mine :p, I found this to be the best cheapest/performance ratio at the time I got it which was around early JAN 03. :cool:

Actually, I leave Sharky's open on my screen alot, so then of course you would see that I'm on, but I could be elsewhere.

make sure you get them from either best buy or klipsch, or they won't honor the warranty. like from newegg, klipsch confirmed they don't honor any RMAs for systems bought from newegg. so you'll have to pay for them to get it fixed, which means don't even think about them sending you a new set if anything were to happen to your old set.Quote:

Good points pinchyCM, although at $399 if you consider what you're getting with in the ultras, its impossible to beat for the price -Its a steal on its own.
As for this Midiland system, the stands are the nicest looking part of the system! :) Can't comment on the sound ,but the subwoofer looks very weak - and I cant imagine going down to my subwoofer to adjust the knobs all the time, that would be just too annoying.
I don't know why the hell you would want all the controls on the sub:confused:
They look pretty, but no very practical for a computer setup. Especially since the speakers look like the can't detach from the wooden stands.
edit: Is that a remote between the sub and center channel?

Yes it has a wireless remote... wondering how you would even connect it to an audigy 2 say... seems to have no standard headphone size plugs to connect the two.
How are the megaworks 550? Looking at those atm. More bass than the mh505? >< That's what I'm looking for #1... bass.

At least that's what I heard from the forums. I posted again, just to make sure, cuz I know some others who want them, but were debating whether or not to get them from newegg. I've spread Ultra fever. :)

You considered any of the klipsch promedia series? Also could you be more specific in the type of bass you prefer? There are big differences going from system to system...

If you want bass for cheap get the Gmx's which come with an SWS bundle, although this wont be nearly the same quaility or quantity as an ulra setup, it is much cheaper.
The sat's have gotten mixed reviews.. some people like em some dont.
Was looking at the promedia 4.1 but was already said on the first page I believe it wouldn't be a decent improvement over my current mh505 (unless that person was clueless?). Obviously I would love some ultras :) But maybe in a few months. Type of bass hmm... the deep stuff that makes your heart start beating at 120bpm and just fills the room. The monsoon bass is more of the crisp "bumps" I guess when you know there is supposed to be bass.Quote:

They are geared towards gamers... However, Based on what you like:

I would completely recommend a set of Klipsch 4.1s which would walk all over the mh505's in output and depth.
Or even If you like the decoder and features of the GMX then those would be a good option as well, it comes with 6.5" long throw which fills most rooms with bass easy. If you buy it from klipsch it comes with a free SWS 8 inch sub thats a marvel in its own. That would output about the same bass as the original 5.1s (not as good quality mind you) for $299

No way I could drop 300 on that GMX knowing ultras are only 60 bucks more :) So I guess I have narrowed it down to between the promedia 4.1 and the megaworks550. Decisions decisions....
seems the 4.1 refurbished for 150 are gone on the klipsch site :/ either that or im blind theres no purchase button anywhere on the page.
The 550's are more musical than the 4.1s for classical, jazz or anything that requires alot of detail also heavy(in your face).
Imo the Klipsch 4.1 sub has more depth and Slam than the 550, and is better for games, dvds,and bass heavy music ( rap, techno/trance hip hop Etc) the dual 6.5 inch drivers deliver more punch, power and dynamic range.
Again imo the 4.1 sub is better suited for what you will be using, the 550's are more rounded in the music department but a little more expensive..
haveing said that you can't go wrong with either set.
