if i change vid cards or a driver change or whatever windows usually reboots in 640x480 mode until u change the resolution on the desktop, the thing is i have like 80 icons on my desktop and i sorta keep them organized and when it goes to 640x480 is moves them around to fit them all onto the screen, is there a way to make windows keep the icons in their place even though u cant access them? its kinda annoying to have to reorganize them them all, maybe i should just take some off lol

What you could do is create a folder on the desktop and call them appropriately like "Games", "Apps" and place as many applicable shortcuts in them...
Unless Im wrong, many programs have a "save icon position" feature. Rage3d has it, powerstrip too, possibly others, those are what I can remember right off my head.
Try This;
Get your desktop the way you like it and reboot to make sure it's saved on restart.....
Copy your C:\Windows\ShellIconCache file to a different folder and even rename it if necessary....
When your done fiddling with new video card/etc.....
Delete the (newly recreated....ShellIconCache file.....see below) from Windows and move a "copy" of your saved file into Windows....so you always have original..
Remember to "rename" it correctly once moved back into windows(only if copying THE ORIGINAL GOOD ONE to another folder forced you to rename it/and windows got confounded)...

80 icons?!?! how do you get anything done? :eek: my advice is to get rid of all those icons and do things through the menus. desktop icons are really poor interface design, anyway -- you have to move/close/minimize all your work just to open a program! how dumb! :p
ATI's Hydravision has a Save/Restore Icons feature, I use it all the time.
Not to mention each and every icon sucks up ram right off the top.
There are a few remember my icon settings programs out there.
I4one's ones idea has some merrit. Many programs zap the
ShellIconCache file.

not trying to be confrontational.....but it's the quickest fastest way to get anything done...especially when combined with the Autohide Taskbar feature(and useful in IE6 too w/Fullscreen mode) and the Bozos who invented the damn Desktop Interface should've thought a little more about "Getting any work done"
yeah, you're right that the show desktop function helps (a recent UI design, unless apple had that early on, though i don't think so). hunting through 80 icons still doesn't sound like fun to me, but to each his own. :p and there's still the memory issue...Quote:

Didn't mean to come off too harshly...
It's just amazing to me how few realize how to get the most out of what they've got(not necessarily meaning you,as I admire Linux users..and I may even get around to trying/using it one day)

My taskbar is setup on the Right Hand side of screen...(I find it's much more comfortable to rotate my hand to the right then it is to move your whole arm down to get to taskbar set to bottm of screen(Most people don't even know they can move it by dragging it)

My intellipoint software is set for high 'Pointer speed' and 'smart speed' mouse movement....ie. I can move across the whole screen with minimal movement and fast...

I use TweakUI on the Desktop interface (and for a whole lot more)....to Eliminate/Zap/Kill that "stupid" "Shortcut to" prefix....that's placed in front of every shortcut...
Therefore I can use "Auto Arrange" and/or "Arrange By Name" to make my Shortcuts in Alphabetical order.....It's easy to find the right one that way

By moving the taskbar to the right(or left) side of screen, the Minimized windows stack neatly on top of each other...and they're much more legible as to which is which....with the info on the minimized title bar.....
Their not jumbled around like some "dumb" AOL interface.....
There's WAY TOO MANY Mousee Movements/Clicks any other way IMO....
Hopefully when/if VAIROX revisits....there'll be some more usefull info here

but think of the icon problem this way: you're working on something, you've got other windows open in the background, and you need to open another program to access some file or information.
with the icon method, you have to clear the desktop first with "show desktop" and then find the icon, which can totally break your concentration, your "flow." that's right, just clearing the desktop can really break your concentration. :mad:
compare that with a right click menu. you click on an empty part of the desktop and choose your program, nothing is disturbed, nothing is minimized, and that's it. much better. :p

as for 80 icons, i use this stuff EVERYDAY, well 90%...it sucks to go through menus, folders etc to find the program exe...but thats me, how much ram does this many icons take up? more than 10 megs? i didnt think it took up hardly any, i mean they are 1kb shortcut files...or am i missing something
I keep all of my shortcut icons on the quick start bar. They are handy and the bar will quickly popup when you put the cursor on that edge of the display. You don't have to have all your windows minimized with show desktop to access the quickstart bar either.
Have you thought about other ways to organize shortcuts? You can try what I do, make a folder (i.e. Games) and put your game shortcuts in there. Now drag the folder to your taskbar and resize the toolbar to your liking (mine only shows the words Games). Now all you have to do is click on the toolbar to pop up you list of shortcuts. Works great for other programs and is a lot more organized than having 80 icons on your desktop.
I'm using 98.......so I don't know about 2000/XP's submenu options....but if you're referring to 9x/ME...there's only a NEW submenu when you do that(suppose I don't want New..?...I want Existing)...and you also have to have your windows smaller than Desktop allows(which I do anyway) ........and if you think having 80icons in there is any fun....think again...

i was talking more about other OSes that allow you to customize the right click menu. with win98, you're basically screwed. :p (j/k) i still have 98 on my old laptop, and it does give you the "desktop menu" option for the taskbar. you could make subfolders on the desktop to group all the icons, and between that the quick start menu, you'd probably have a much easier time.
ya im gonna make folders for shortcuts...vid editing apps in one, games in another...thats like 40 icons right there. damn windows.

I have created folders on the Taskbar before(as win98 sees fit to call it)(the running tasks and services are where the clock is).....anyway, I've done it ua549's way and it basically still gets to messy (even a "Desktop" folder...ie Right click blank area of taskbar>point to Toolbars>choose New Toolbar and navigate to any folder)
I've created Fav's and Music folders this way in the past and I still find it preferable my way.....
I've helped someone restore a corrupted Quicklaunch bar in the past this way.....
Another problem is the fact that these Taskbar folders don't allow "view" arrangement, such as by "type" rather than always alphabetically....
I suppose there's a Reg hack i could figure out/find to do this.....but
Needless to say, I find it much easier to do it with Desktop Icons....
I guess we all have our preferences...which is a GOOD thing IMO....
