Is there really any big difference in the game consoles out today? Do any offer better graphics or advantages over the other? Would one be more suited to run on an HDTV? Also, which has the best selection of games?

Best Hardware wise: Xbox
Best Game Quantity: PS2 (not to say there arent any awsome games for, cause there are many)
Best Game Quality: GameCube
The PS2 definitely has the best selection of games: There are many of them, and many good ones.
The Gamecube has quite a bit of games, but there are only a handful of good ones, BUT, this handful of games are so extraordinarily good that they warrant the purchase of the console.
The XBox also has a decent amount of games, but there are really only two or three games worth owning on the system, but they are not worth owning the system for. If you're no stranger to a soldering iron, and love oldschool gaming, as well as new, the XBox should be high on your want list, as it is mighty when modded, making it a portable everything you ever wanted (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64 to an extent, PSX, MAME, Neo-Geo, and DivX player).
My choice goes to the PS2. The graphics are not up to par with the Cube or XBox, but it has a LOT of good games on it, and several great games.
If you're not the type that plays games all the damn time, you're better off going with the Gamecube, whose library of great games is small, but its definitely quality over quantity here.
Get the XBox if you're a total graphics whore.
do all of them work online?
The system to own right now is the gamecube. I've had gamecube, ps2, and xbox. They all offer online support, but xbox's online features are best, followed by ps2, and gamecube barely has online play(only a few games). Gamecube has plenty of games slated for future release. Same thing goes for xbox. As for ps2 I don't see many good future releases, but it has a huge library of games already. It's all up to personal preference, but my choice would be gamecube or xbox. Probably gamecube.:)

So far I've only had PS1 and PS2, so I can't really say about the rest of the consonles. However my PS2, gaming wise have been great. I could find some of the best games on it so I really like PS2. But as I said I haven't tried the rest so I can't say really a lot.
I own a PS2 and have played the XBOX and gamecube several times. The PS2 has great games, but as mentioned above, the hardware is a bit limited. Nothing too dramatic though. The Game Cube has some really fun games: Viewtiful Joe, Metroid Prime, Smash Bros Melee, but thats all I really liked on it (from the games I have played). I didnt really like the XBOX that much. The game selection isnt too great, especially since Im not really a big Halo fan. If you want my opinion go for the PS2 or the GameCube, both are well worth it. I hear the GameCube is going for $100 at some places.. I think Im gonna pick one up if thats the case.
Xbox is definately best suited for HDTV. It supports 540p, 720p, and 1080i resolutions. I'm not certain if Playstation 2 or Gamecube do as well, but I don't believe so.
I believe PS2 and GCN only support Progressive Scan.Quote:

Is there any kind of fees for online play with these systems?
Dont buy a system because of the specs, graphics, or whatever superficial crap. Buy it for the games you're interested in. Did you buy a 3d0 or a jaguar back then because it was *****slapping genesis and snes in graphics? I hope not..
PS2 is mostly free, i dont know any actual ps2 games that have a monthly fee outside of EQ. Xbox live has a monthly fee. Gamecube's sole online game, PSOII has a monthly fee and its 2nd online upcoming game, PSOIII will also have a monthly fee.Quote:

Online gaming on consoles hasnt convinced me to bother with it yet, not while i have this PC around me.
For ps2 I believe it's pay per month depending on the game. Xbox come with a year's worth service(at least when I was thinking about buying it) and I'm not sure about GC since it's only one game for it.Quote:

You'd really rather have a pretty game than a good game?Quote:

I own a cube and it is a great system. The Xbox has a reputation of being prone to breaking, one of the reasons I'm glad the cube doesn't have a hard drive. I think the graphics are comparable between the Xbox and Cube. If you own a computer, I don't think there is a reason to own an Xbox. If you're a college guy, I think there are more games on the PS2 that will appeal to you.
i have been wanting a GC for some time now just to try it out... But from what i can tell from people that have all 3. The XBOX has great graphics but not a big selection and there games that are worth playing are few and far between. While the PS2 has tons of games you can play. While GC has good games but they more focused to 13 and below and its rare to find a rated M game.
You dont really need an M game to have a good time. Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Viewtiful Joe - All excellent games!Quote:

I own all 3 systems
and this is how I always sum it up
if the game comes out on all 3 I buy it for XBOX.
Each console has its flagship titles if you have to have one then get the console its on, but if your not going for a specific game then id say get the box.
I just wish there was some way to mod my PC to play XBOX games, and use that nifty controller.
Never said that. But I don't want a good game that looks like sh*t either. I guess I'm after the one with the most potential and best graphics quality. I believe in time that there will be plenty of good games on all three systems. I've already picked out several on all of them which I like.Quote:

I know those are cool games I am just saying what most people have told me. I liked that game monkey ball even though it is a kiddy game.Quote:

speaking on the controller. How well does the controller work with first person shooter games? I don't see how it could be better than the easy movement a mouse gives you.Quote:

There really is no comparison. There are some people who've never even played a PC game with the keyboard/mouse setup, and swear that the gamepad is king. These people are sadly mistaken. The truth is you will feel like sending the controller flying through the screen the first time you try playing a console FPS, but as you keep it up you will get used to it.Quote:
