Windows 98 would probably be the best. But, support for 98 is not going to last forever. Windows 2000 will easily run on that machine, and for bare bones uses may be a better option.
Windows 98,i ran it on my Packard Bell 233mhz
no contest. for those tasks with those specs, you should use linux. try libranet 2.7, which i think still uses IceWM as the default window manager, giving a very win98 feel (at twice the speed :D).
no way windows XP will run on that pc AND you want to use the net....after you dl SP1 on that computer or any updates...it'll run slow as hell....would reccommend 2000 cuz its stable....but i dont knw if you would want to dl the SP's on it......
....or you could go linux since you aren't doing anything that NEEDS windows...
The days of saying that Internet surfing works on a slow computer are over. This is the age of Spyware. The common man or woman surfing the Internet needs a 6GHz PC with 20GB of RAM to make sure they don't suffer from any spyware-related slowdowns. Too bad today's hardware isn't powerful enough to do it.
it is if you use linux, because linux doesn't have any spyware.Quote:

Linux is not a bad option. Dowload a browser and a chat program and your ready
Windows XP
I run FreeBSD 5.1 on an HP machine that is similar.
I wouldn't bother with Win98se as it is very old and obsolete. Some web site will require IE 6 as a minimum very soon.
ok i am going to try to use xp just for kicks and giggles. i set windows for the "adjust for the best performance" if it is too slow i will work my way down to 2000 then 98se i heard ME is just a toy.
y not something like FreeBSD instead of 98se?
well because i dont wanna take the to teach my family how to use a different os incase they wanna use it plus i dont really know how do use anything other than windows because i never tried. i used redhat b-4 but it was confusing...i just got xp on it and its running fine so far it hasnt been slow at all but well see what happens when i start installing programs
anything less than 128mb ram will be nightmare on a winxp system. It will run with slightly less, but the swap file usage is like every 2 seconds... I already tried... win98 = the crapola... Anything slower than a 500mhz, i would reccomend win2k but on a 200mhz linux is probably your best bet
A very stripped down version of win2k would probably be your best bet in terms of security, performance, and stability.
I'm absolutely shocked that 98 is leading the pack right now. I've used Win2k flawlessly on systems as low as Pentium 133. That would be your best bet. If it was >=500Mhz, WinXP would be the one to go with but you'd need some more RAM as well.
Whatever you do, just don't use 98 or Me!!! There is no point to using either of these OSes anymore. 98 is decent but still very old. Me is arguably the worst OS M$ ever released.
If your system can't handle at least Win2k, get a new system.
congratulations, of all the options both windows and linux, you chose the worst one for that computer. :p (why do people even bother to ask anything? XP on that PC, and just to surf the web? whatever. :p) it also seems like a lot of money to throw away on an XP license for such a relatively slow PC, but that's up to you. ;)Quote:

You really think he "paid" for another license on that system? :pQuote:

ya, i paid for it riiiggghhhttt
linux...i kinda like mandrake myself.
If you prefer not to learn an OS: Win 2000
If you would like to spend lots of time learning and tinkering: Linux
O GOD!!
98se leading?
WIN 2K ALL THE WAY!!!!
Didn't M$ already kill support for Win98?
Win2K, just be sure to tweak your services and swap file and everything else you know how to get your hands on so it'll run as fast as possible. I have a 233 box with 512 ram and it runs 2K just fine.
ya they killes support thats why i wanna save that for my last resort
