I'd rather have a thinkpad because doing linux kernel programming is less of a pain running linux on a x86. Also that most jobs I'll get will make me work in windows. There really is no reason not to use what you prefer if you are writing in java. I'd always choose my personal machine over an generic windows box on some network. And in general the UI in osx is much more powerful. Even the biggest windows .net programmer friends I have tell me if they could have everything (games, visual studios .net, etc) in osx, they'd just run osx.
