I'm making the switch.

More than likely going to sell my 12" pbook G4. I want one of those X32 Thinkpads. Among the very very few notebooks I've come across that made me look twice during my use of the powerbook. Basically the titanium casing, gigE, good price, pcmcia slot, screen and keyboard light, and generally sturfy design is what is making me want it. I also keep finding that my projects involve hacking inside the linux kernel, or working on something in windows (when I had a job, a month ago). I guess there isn't a ton of room for osx in the mainstream research and comercial areas of software dev.

I still run osx. But probably not on a laptop anymore.

At least you aren't switching the other way, you'll get a lot more money out of your used Apple than you would get out of any used PC of the same age.

Not nesicirly( If thats how u spell it) I only got 300 for my 1 year old Tangering Ibook and got a lot more for another widows it depends what puter u got

Apples hold their value a lot better. Apple hasn't sold a clamshell iBook new in over 4 years. Most 4 year old, 233-300mhz, PC laptops aren't worth $300.

ya but thats a 4 year old windows if u sell a one year old Windows against a 1 year old mac youll get more money for the windows as the demand is higher for windows than mac. Since windows is easier to use so i nebie to computers is gonna get a windows as they are a lot easier than mac. But yes if its a grapic designer or web design as myself there probbaly gonna get a new mac not a used. So selling a windows pc is gonna be a lot easier than selling a old mac.

Also if i could suggest a PC after switching from mac id get an alienware notebook check some out at www.alienware.com

Interesting logic, but thats not really how it works, go look at how much a 1Ghz G4 Powermac sells for.

ya i no but look how much a Area-51 Laptop sells 4 Theres windows that sell at the same price macs do. So saying 1 laptop dosent really make since.

Find me a 4 year old PC laptop, that has a 233mhz-300mhz CPU, that is selling for $300.

Nope, definetly going to go with a thinkpad. Only laptops that are as solid as powerbooks. I wouldn't mind getting a 15" powerbook way way later when they are intel based either. I am going to miss an osx laptop, but everyone wants you to code in windows or linux a lot of the time. It sucks. I also like how the thinkpad is mostly titanium, but the bottom and keyboard area aren't: so you don't burn :) ... as much.

BAsically the x32 seems to provide more features (minus bluetooth stock), more portability, and as much or more sturdy design compared to the pb. Also, I;d say the thinkpads keep their value as much as the macs do. Much different from crappy dell,and hp laptops: heh totally the case of easy come easy go... sorta.

IBMs rock. I'm thinking of using the FS550 as my home jukebox and the x41 for everything else. I'm getting sick of syncing 5 PCs :(

Well I still use osx, and I continue to more and more once they get some intel hardware released that is supported. I am hoping it becomes easier to put it on stock intel hardware in the future. I mean I'd pay the $70 or $130 or whatever it is (depending on of I get it as a student) for a copy. I just need something else on a laptop. Although I think the mac is probably a lot better for general purpose computing on a laptop, since the powermanagement works so well and the apps make good use of stuff like bluetooth.

Reminds me of all the tools in my classes who have Powerbooks. They believe they're so righteous that they have OS X and they always think they're so incredibly better than everyone just because they don't use windows. Ugh.

It's funny when in my Java classes they don't even bother using the very decent Windows boxes (I'm talking 3GHz+ P4 HTs w/ 1GB of RAM) in front of them and instead whip out their 'books. Then they think they're too snooty to run off the battery and wireless internet that's in every academic building on campus and unplug the monitors and ethernet cables just so they can remote desktop to their Powermacs back in their dorm rooms, completely ignoring the professor's 1 hour lecture.

Rather hypocritical of Apple and their fanatics to be saying "Think Different" when all their systems look and behave exactly the same. A lot of people don't even bother changing the standard desktop background!!

I don't think you know what you are talking about. Of course there can't be a post remotely related to osx, without some childish ranting.

I'd rather have a thinkpad because doing linux kernel programming is less of a pain running linux on a x86. Also that most jobs I'll get will make me work in windows. There really is no reason not to use what you prefer if you are writing in java. I'd always choose my personal machine over an generic windows box on some network. And in general the UI in osx is much more powerful. Even the biggest windows .net programmer friends I have tell me if they could have everything (games, visual studios .net, etc) in osx, they'd just run osx.

well this sucks

the x32s seem to be out of service or something, because I can't choose one on the lenovo site anymore. The stupid x40 doesn't have a whole lot over my powerbook, battery life sucks w/o the extended battery, hd isn't user upgradeable, and only has one so-dimm. Shite! :(

Yeah I totally agree on that point. And I can understand your frustration. I have the same w/ other mac users. I sorta of use everything though, but osx is definetly my favorite for my general desktop. I am not as fond of apple's hardware :-/.

Hmmm, I preferred OSX for the general desktop too for a while, and then I stumbled across stardock.com...

I don't like the dock so much as I like the apps and expose; lets also not forget spotlight. I tend to turn off as many of the pointless visual effects as I can, unless they have some useful function in which case it wouldn't be a _pointless_ effect. The integration of addressbook, mail, ical, isync, and bluetooth is just so awesome. I also like safari and shiira a lot. One thing I hate about using windows is that no one as written a web browser using khtml: which I have had really good luck with (fast, and does well with css stuff among other things). In general it give me a great clean user interface, good apps, minimal bloat and bugs, and a unix-like system. I can't say I get that on any other platform, and for me they are all essentials for a general purpose workstation. I also forgot all the developer oriented stuff that comes with it too, which is a must for me.

Hell, I don't know if I want a thinkpad anymore. Looks like I can't get the model I wanted direct. I may as well wait on some of the new yonah based dual core powerbooks that I hear may come out this year.

Hmm, I may know what you are talking about. Is that the business class? I think my mom has one that here work gave her. It seems pretty solid, sucks that these companies screw avg joe but are capable of making great stuff: which is apparent since any business class notebook is so much better than what they sell in bestbuy.

Yeah. All the notebooks in the hp business line-up start with "nx", save for the little one which is "nc" I think. They directly compete with the ThinkPads.

I think I have decided. Thinkpad T43, with bluetooth, 80GB disk, and 2Ghz Pentium M. 14" 1480x1050. It is right around 5lbs, weight varies depending on the battery I use. The best part is that it is fairly light (only a little heavier than my 12" powerbook), and extremely expandable. The proprietary disk, and crapy 4 cell battery on the x40 made me shy away. With this thing, I can even put a battery in the optical drive bay, or even an extra disk.
