Mac/PC commercial

OK I know it is only a dopey Mac/PC ad but one part has me mystified. I'm talking about the one where the PC character says Windows 7 is going to fix the problems of Vista--and then moving back in time--how Vista was supposed to fix XP, and XP 2000, and 2000 ME, and ME 98, and 98 95, and 95 Windows 2. Windows 2???? What the heck is Windows 2? I've been at this a long time and I don't remember Windows 2. Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, and Windows 3.0 yes. But Windows 2?

Dumb commercial to prey on the dumb. How many Mac hardware/software generations have their been in the past 25 years?

I was a user of both Windows and Windows 2 back in the 80's.
They were simply less functional versions of Windows 3.
Until Windows came along there was no graceful way to switch between applications or share data between applications.
A new release of an OS, no matter which one, is to solve issues with what it replaces.

Well OSX is OS 10 so there has been 10 software generations... hardware? Dunno.. depends what you consider a full generation I guess.

Yes that commercial is just stupid. Why does mac release new versions of theirs then? New generation of software always tries to make things better over the previous version.

The new ones are pretty sad actually. There was one that showed a lady upgrading from XP not to 7 but to a Mac. Quite wishful thinking lol. I like how they fail to mention the 50-100% price premium over a comparable PC. Mac has practially topped out their user base with their current business model. They will need to go open platform to actually compete with windows. They can stay a niche market and IMO it is better for them to do so but their major growth will happen not in the world of computers but in portables. But it does get sad to see them try to puff up and directly take on MS.

Those are the greatest commercials ever! Better than the new stupid Microsoft commercials where they are like, "Errrr...Im a PC and Windows 7 was my idea...errrrr..."

Not that I would ever buy a Mac because Im too cheap and I know how to use a PC. I just like the commercials.

These commecials make me throw up in my mouth.

I'm not even a Mac hater... but any tard with half a brain in their head knows that there are both benefits and drawbacks to Macs and PCs.

The commercial craps on Vista... and rightfully so I think. But it also calls XP a failed OS... which is utterly ridiculous. XP has been WILDLY popular! I think that XP was a great OS. It skipped right over 2000... didn't mention it at all. I know that technically speaking that 2000 was from the NT lineage... but 2000 was pretty mainstream. In reality was used for a lot more than just for business. And I thought that 2000 was great as well. ME was a disaster. I have no issue with the commercial crapping on it. MS has it coming with ME. Both Win98 and 95 were pretty huge, and popular at the time.

This commercial does just prey on the stupid I think. Which I think is about half the typical Mac users (the other half being really tech savy).

"Technically" and every other form of speaking, 2000 and XP are both NT. As are Vista and Windows 7.

Not a chance are 50% of Mac users really tech savvy. I'd put the figure <5%. But the commercial isn't for Mac users, it's for PC users, trying to convince them become Mac users.

I hate any and all commecricals that do nothing but bad mouth the other guy. There are some commercials I've seen that say the competitors name more often then there own name...20 minutes later I can't remember who made the commercial and which product they really wanted me to buy.

I've never sat down behind a MAC screen. Show me some really cool stuff and maybe I will. (NOT)

Maybe so.

My perceptions are probably skewed due to working around other techies all the time.

The last "bad" Microsoft OS I used was Windows ME.

The last "bad" Apple OS I used was OS 9.

Win ME had more (and more serious) problems than OS9, but I can partially forgive that since I was an inexperienced user running on a custom built machine, constantly swapping hardware in and out, while running everything from games to Office.
OS9 ran on a bone stock PowerMac G4 with a handful of productivity programs installed and a mostly email workload, and still managed to crash, lock-up, and generally have tantrums during menial tasks.

And that's not even touching the price of the hardware the OS's ran on.

Apple is worried that the stigma they so relied on with Vista will be disappearing soon, and are now resorting to an all-out blitz of "Remember when..." ads.

Well, I don't jump on Mac's case from an ignorant position. I've had extensive time behind the screen of a Mac. It isn't a "bad" OS by any means. However, it is redundant and IMO pointless to use an niche OS that is on par with the mainstream OS. Why would I want to use an OS that has practically the same capabilities as another yet can't run the majority of programs/games? To top it off there is a major price premium and I am being forced to buy their hardware. I can see no reason what-so-ever, logically, why someone would choose a mac other than the vanity factor. Of course there are the graphics design people but they account for a negligible amount of users.

I'm not sure what sort of "extensive time" you've had using a Mac but it and Windows are hardly similar, other than both being operating systems. I suppose you could use your entire argument against Linux, *BSD, BeOS, AmigaOS and so on and so forth. Why have any choice at all? Everyone should just use the same OS. Choice is for commies... wait.

All things being the same I would take a Mac over a PC any day, but as it is I make a living supporting PCs and I need to be able to know how to do things that necessitate my using a PC. I do use my little Mac netbook second only to my main desktop PC, of my 4 computers.

I recommend Macs to everyone who asks me what computer to buy as well. They function better with fewer problems. Whether it's security through obscurity or any other reason, Macs have fewer software issues. I would laugh at anyone who claims any sort of bias in my opinion since I've spent a decade running multi-hundred client Windows networks and continue to do Windows administration to this day.

I can't see any reason what-so-ever, logically, why someone would bother upgrading to Windows 7 other than the vanity factor and yet dozens of people on this board alone have hard-ons over it.

Possibly DX11. But even then not going to be mainstream for a while. DX10 isn't even yet.

Most people on these boards also got it for free through a school, subscription service, special offer, or at least heavily discounted. I doubt very much that MOST of the people on here paid anything close to retail for it.

So yeah, if I can upgrade for free, I more than likely will. I was perfectly pleased with Vista, but for $30 or for free, I'd say the tweaks in Windows 7 are worth it.

Difference of opinion. I prefer to run any program I want without having to dual boot, plus I don't like being forced into hardware and having to pay a 50% premium for it.

You can debate small points but at the end of the day an OS isn't supposed to be noticed. They are there to run programs and be stable. The OS that runs the most programs available is Windows. It is perfectly stable. IMO that makes it the best choice. Little nit picky things like the GUI, small performance differences, or other features pale in comparison to that and are negligible to the common user.

Fewer software issues, fewer software options. Personally I don't have any software issues what-so-ever with windows. I can't remember the last time it locked up due to the OS. The last time I locked my computer up was when I was OCing. I haven't had any problems that I recall since the early XP days.

And yes, I do apply my logic to Linux and others. I recommend any casual user to go with the largest supported OS so that anyone can help them if they have trouble plus the knowledge they gain can be used outside their computer since most computers run windows.

:shrug: The people I work for have jobs, and it's worth while to them to spend an extra $200 up front to get a computer that's not gonna sh*t out on them 6 months from now when their kid tries to get hot naked Angelina Jolie pictures and blows out their Windows installation with a nice malware infestation. They'll spend that $200 + more and waste my Saturday afternoon while I try to fix it before giving up and reinstalling Windows from scratch. Might as well get a Mac and save all our time.

I'm fine with people buying Windows PCs. It keeps me in work. I hate Linux and have no desire or skill to support it. But if someone is going to ask me to recommend a computer I'm gonna give them the best answer I can: get a Mac. It'll do everything you need it to do and won't get blowed up surfing porn.

The first thing to keep in mind is that Apple lies. Their main advertising strategy is simply to lie - shamelessly and relentlessly. Microsoft has failed to respond with suits for slander as they should, so Apple lies with impunity.

Windows XP was never mean to "fix" anything, it was an update to the Windows NT line, specifically Windows 2000 - which was a robust and extremely stable OS.

Windows 1.0 was bloody awful. Tandy's "Deskmate" was a far better GUI than the original Windows.

Windows 2.0 significantly improved on the earlier version, but frankly was still crap.

Personally I found Windows to be worthless until Windows 95.

(WFW) Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was a business staple for years running on Intel 80386 and 80486 machines in a domain environment. Windows 95 was more of a consumer OS than a business one. Most of my clients went directly from WFW 3.11 to NT Workstation 3.5 or 3.51 when they first deployed the Intel Pentium processor.

Personally, I never used Windows 9x. In 1992 I went from Windows 3 to Windows NT as an NT tester.

I remember going from DOS 4.2 to Windows 3.1 and thought I died and went to heaven. Took me a few weeks before I started using the mouse - cause the Win version of Lotus 1-2-3 used the same commands as the DOS version.

Like UA I jumped directly from WFW 3.11 to NT 3.51 (although he probably went straight to NT 3.1). I thought the "start button" in Windows 95 was for chumps and loved the old 3.1 interface, lol. I almost never like any new interface MS has put out there. I got used to it when I had to with NT4.

A BIG +1.

As with most anything in life, if you get stupid with it, it'll break. Windows is no different. Some of the most basic precautionary measures will keep your Windows working just fine.

And this applies to Mac just as it does to Windows. My roomie is a Mac user. He's computer iliterate. The hard drive on his Mac crashed recently. There is just no getting around this fact of life... hard drives crash. They do so even more when you are tossing your laptop on the couch. Laptops overheat when you smother their intake/outake vents by laying them on a blanket. All these things happen whether you have a Mac or a PC. If your ignorant with your computer, it'll crash the same as any other.

And sure the Mac OS is less vulnerable to viruses, etc. But it has it's own VERY significant drawbacks as well. As my rromate also found out when he wanted a game that I have on my PC for his Mac.

"Oh, you didn't know? A lot of software isn't compatible with Mac".

I went from DOS to Windows 95 kicking and screaming. I liked DOS. Once you were comfortable with the command line it was just fine.

I used a trackball for years because it seemed easier for me than the mouse was. The trackball was familiar from Missle Command or Centipede.
