FF7 for PC available!

After last week's fiasco of the game accidentally releasing early, it is now officially available for $9.99. Get it now if you want it, I already did. Don't know how much I like the idea of DRM on it though. I hate to say it, but I might wait for the community to come out with a... "patch" to alleviate that problem.

New download is 2372MB, and requires you to use the Square Enix FF7 Downloader app. The game has an "unlock code" and serial number as well.

Screen cap of the order page so there are no surprises for people thinking of getting it. (Size, keys, etc.)

Unlock code, serial number, special software to download it, DRM, and the need for an always online internet connection. There's basically nothing about this release that appeals to me.

PS1 disc + frameskip on an emulator FTW.

Nope. I mean, I'm sure you could run it at a high resolution, but this is just a re-release, not a graphical update.

Always-on? I didn't know about that part. Well they have my money, I hope they put it towards something better. In the meantime, I'll continue playing other stuff.

For what it's worth, it does require a much more recent version of DirectX, etc. than the original which was released way back in the day. *Edit I wonder how much the spec bump is caused by the actual game vs. the DRM? :mad:

To be fair Windows 7 couldn't even run on those 98 specs let alone a game.

Well, because I spent the $10, I went ahead and tried to install the game. As soon as the install is complete, securom pops up to validate the unlock code and activate the game. After that, the "Square Enix FF7 Launcher" starts up, which then downloads patches to the game, and waits for you to login with your SquareEnix ID or your Facebook account. For grins, I unplugged my network cable and tried launching it. Immediate error and no way to play the game. After that i uninstalled it.

:( :mad: Looks like I wasted that $10.

I cannot see your logic here. You own the game, you've installed the game, you would like to play the game... but because you need to be online to launch it you are not allowing yourself to play? o_O

Too much bother. If it is that convoluted to start a 15 year old game then I wouldn't want to get into it and lose saves/progress due to disconnects. Just get a ps1 emulator and play. The emulators probably offer more graphical options anyway.

I don't get why they're making users jump through all these hoops when they could have just done it like gog.com. I've bought games on there for which I still have the CD somewhere simply because it's so convenient.

I gave it one more try this morning. Can't play it due to a weird bug. The game permanently activates the left arrow key in game. Meaning I can't select anything, and can't control the character. Tried unplugging/replugging the keyboard, etc. No help at all.
