Some interesting things so far. The switching features looks pimp and Tv seems to be tightly integrated into the system.
Another COD type game....snoooooooze
Looks like PC gaming is going to be back. Gimmicks gimmicks and more gimmicks. Lame.
They seemed to spend more time on the NON gaming aspects of the device for this 1 hour fluff piece.
The COD video was nice, BUTTT I wanted to hear or see more technical specs on the characters.
I Will say that SONY out did them in round one. E3 will certainly show who has the better exclusive games and graphics.
Sony? You mean the people who didn't even have a device to show in operation and only showed the controller?
Only thing I want to know is if the blu ray player is 3d or not. Don't care about tv integration, don't care about kinect integration. I'll admit it's slick, but still want just a gaming platform. My tv already does most of the stuff they showed; at least to the extent that I care about.
I just do not think this "console" is going to work at all. I have a feeling that Sony is going to smash on MS this round.
So it looks like MS will be integrating "game trading" with their new systems and actiavely going for the used game market.

personally I think I'm looking to pass on this system. It seems less like a game console and more like a restricted multimedia PC.
Xbox One Does Require Internet Connection, Can't Play Offline Forever

And here's the bombshell:
Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?
Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.
Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.
Harrison: Correct.
I was expecting about what they showed. I didn't think they would give us a look at the console, so that was a bit surprising. I don't know what people expected. Watching the tech panel after the main event, the software director talked about them using virtualization layers for the gaming OS and the app OS. A delegate system lets those two OSes talk between each other, which is awesome for developers. They completely compartmentalize the gaming side from the app side, so each dev only has to worry about one SDK BUT the user can switch instantly between them. Its like the Halo Anniversary edition where both engines run at the same time and you can switch back and forth. Very slick.
They also talked about changing higher level functions of games as time goes on, so top end things like achievements, leaderboards, and such can be dynamic and change over time. A developer could easily add events to a game that are timed, such as seasonal achievements or weekend items. That's built in at the system level and supported through the software.
Good stuff:
HDDs in all SKUs
Bluray
8GB RAM
Force feedback through the controller triggers
Controller looks great
USB 3.0 (Logitech G27 support please!!!)
Good stuff that I don't care about:
Cable/satellite TV interfacing
NFL contract is huge (sony had it for the last two years)
Multitasking
Flaky stuff, still to be determined:
Processor/GPU
Price
Date
Game price hike?
The bad for me:
HDCP on everything probably
Strange looking box, don't like the vents on the top
Uncertain about Kinect
The bad that I don't care about:
Used game fees
Internet authorization
As for used games, I don't care at all. I buy all my games new to support the devs and the only games I've ever bought used were for older systems like the PSP. For the people that like to save 5 bucks at gamestop, I guess this is bad, but it doesn't affect me at all. Amazon blows games out so cheaply through sales that you get ripped off going to GS to buy anyway. Most games are 30-40 bucks within a month or so and still $55 at GS used. It sucks not being able to lend out games as easily, but eh. We deal with this through Steam and happily give them money, so no biggie for me. Actually its nice to have an excuse for not lending someone a game :) :)
To end, for people that were expecting games at the event, I guess you missed all the news saying there would be very few games at the press event. Games are coming at E3. 15 exclusives including 8 new IPs!
About the online thing. My 360 has been connected online since I bought it. For farmer kids out in rural Kentucky, too bad no shiny new Xbox. I would love to see a house that has a 1080p TV, a brand new Xbox One, and no internet :P. Its not like I'm going to bring my Xbox with me on a cross atlantic flight to play games on (the Diablo 3 argument.)
Honestly, I can't recall the last time i bought used because PC gaming has gotten so price competitive that I just by new later on sale. A shame consoles are pretty much doing the opposite.
Why should my buying decisions be made on features that people other than myself won't be able to enjoy? I and the vast majority of the people in the xbox demographic have internet access in their home. Selfishness has absolutely nothing to do with it. I was hoping to have a decent discussion with everything I wrote, but I end up getting called out for being selfish... *rolls eyes*
Oh come on, don't play the wounded ego angle. Everything you wrote was only based on what you want, which is fine, there is nothing wrong with that. But don't try to make it sound like it isn't selfish. You plainly state that you don't care about other people's situations, that is also fine. Just don't play ignorant, I see things you write here and I know your intelligent enough to realize that you have inflammatory statements in there. You are not trying to have an actual conversation, you are either trying to have a rally behind you or start a flame war.
Why not discuss the points instead of posting a one liner? I don't see anything wrong with what I said. If you have some insight into people that will be affected then I'm curious to hear. I find it very hard to believe that someone with absolutely no access to internet would be in the market for an Xbox One, which is why I think the people that are upset about the online angle are being a bit dramatic about it. If its a principle argument, then that's one thing, but to hinge the argument on internet not being available has always struck me as strange.
What I really find fascinating are the people complaining on facebook and twitter... :) The hypothetical Arkansan gets dragged out quite often on the forums lol

This.
Its not a console, it's a TV that lets you play sports and Call of Duty.
EDIT: holy crap! so advertisement links are now being added to buzz words on posts. ugg...talk about going down hill.
Wow. I've practically stopped coming here since its dwindled down so much. Kind of sad. This site used to be the perfect size. Big enough to sustain a lot of diverse conversations, but small enough to feel friendly. Now its just ten of us guys haha. I had an asian anime banner on the side earlier today that showed a young looking girl sitting on top of a dudes crotch on a picnic blanket advertising some weird dating game. Down hill indeed.
Ahem....
I do agree about the internet thing though. We've already discussed it in another thread. I don't get the uproar over having to connect to the internet. The beloved Steam requires an internet connection and no one *****es about that. DRM on PCs usually require some sort of authentication to a server.... Why is it not okay for a console? Chances are high if you don't have internet access or a hdtv you probably aren't the target demo for Xbox One anyway.
Great point on the steam connection I didn't even think about that. I agree with Timman 100%. And I am also very uninterested in the new xbox at this point. Give me some E3 baby.
I'm not going to buy a next-gen console for a while. The TV stuff isn't interesting to me at all, and the flagship games at the Xbox announcement were Fifa, Madden, Call of Duty, and a racing game. Not a single genuinely new game in the bunch. Apparently the trailer for the new Call of Duty was running on next-gen hardware. It looked just like current gen to me.
The only big thing in gaming that I'm excited for right now is Oculus Rift. If I make a gaming splurge in the near future, it will probably be a VR headset and a computer that's powerful enough to drive it.
A major difference though is that steam is an all digital platform serviced pretty much exclusively through an online connection where as the new Xbox is a mix of digital and physical media.
If the Xbox One only used digital media then I think the online aspect would be a non issue. However, having to buy a physical disc and then needing an online connection to further validate that purchase is silly.
My console gaming is all single player. I don't even think i have my 360 online any more.
I'm thinking that the physical disk is really just a bandaid for a console that is actually entirely online. Its the same principle as being able to buy Skyrim on Steam or walk into Walmart and pick it off the shelf. You still have to authorize the physical copy through Steam to play it. The Xbox One was entirely developed to be like Steam with a disk drive tacked on so people can still pop a disk in it. All games must be installed to the HDD. The disk is just a medium for that data to be copied to the HDD. Once installed, it is validated through a key.
Xbox One disks are exactly the same as PC disks now. They are nothing but the installation data. If you give it to a friend, they must either play on your account or pay the new game price to install it. Its absolutely identical to how PC games operate. MS did say they are going to offer a second hand market, but I'm betting it will be through their service.
I'd say wait until E3 to make the final judgement. This press conference was for press and late night news, so Call of Duty and a shiny racing game were going to be there no matter what. They said 15 new exclusive games and 8 new IPs were going to be released within the first year. They said E3 is where they will show their games. I guess we will see.
Anandtech did confirm 4K support for the Xbox One though which was expected (I doubt in games.)
EDIT: It looks like the PS4 is going to be significantly faster:

Note that unlike the Xbox 360 vs. PS3 era, Sony's hardware advantage here won't need any clever developer work to extract - the architectures are near identical, Sony just has more resources available to use.
