Thanks, but I have a question. Do you think Mandrake will release an update CD, or should I just download and update Mandrake 7.2 to the latest kernal?

If I had to guess I would say that Mandrake will have a new release (7.3? or maybe 8) that contains the 2.4.0 or 2.4.1 kernel in it. It will probably take a couple weeks though since they often mod the kernels a little to there liking and they will want to make sure there aren't any major bugs hiding in there.
Suse has announced there new version with 2.4 is coming in Feb., Redhat and Mandrake can't be far behind.

Thats good news. Man, i cannot tell you the problems ive had just installing XFree 4.0.2 on Mandrake 7.2 (which unfortunately doesnt come with any native NVidia support, it ships with XFree3.3.6). Heres hoping Mandrake hurries up with 7.3, and i'm praying they include XFree 4.0.x along with the new kernel.Quote:

Mandrake 7.2 comes with 3.3.6 and 4.0.1. I just installed it on a system with an nVidia card last week and it gave me the choice...but I hear 4.0.2 is better for GeForce cards.

I downloaded the 2.4.1 kernel but was plagued with problems.. My fault since I use a USB keyboard and mouse! Also my Video card was not liking the new kernel.

Okay, i'm stumped. I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get Mandrake to prompt me to install XFree 4.0.1. I tried expert mode, i tried all mode. Nothing. I did locate the 4.0.1 files on the cd though/Quote:

It has prompted me both times I've installed it. Strangely enough, it doesn't give you the option not to install it, which I would have perferred to have.Quote:

I did an expert install and I know it gave me the choice, can't remember if I did anything else special though, don't think so.

If you had a ton of problems because of a USB keyboard and mouse then you must have configured your kernel incorrectly. I know mine works just fine. Also, they added a lot of new frame buffer and graphic card specific stuff to the 2.4 kernels so you might want to make sure that is set up for your hardware too.

No, not your fault. That's Microsoft thinking. Linux is about technical superiority, and the truth is that its USB support sucks. Live with it, move on, and code a fix!Quote:

Could it be that i have the retail version and you guys are using iso's from a website? There isnt anything else i can do. I did notice something, though----after i choose "expert" and do the graphical install, it has more options on the left pane than with the regular install. However, RIGHT after i click either Install or Upgrade (i tried both) the menu on the left goes right back to the old, simpler non-expert pane with less options. Weird, eh?Quote:

That does sound weird. I do have a burned .iso, but from what I understand, it is supposed to be identical to the retail boxed version.Quote:

I installed Mandrake 7.2 on my system w/GeForce 2 last week. I didn't get an option to install 4.0.1, but after downloading and installing the .95 nvidia drivers the card worked perfectly. BTW, I did install it form a burned ISO...

Actually, not to say you don't knwo what you are talking about but Linux has had kernel patches for USB for ages, ever since Intel first put it on there first motherboard.. this is probably because Intel tests everything they make in linux first since writting device drivers is so much easier.Quote:

As for the Mandrake issue, I know it prompts me for the type of install, I choose expert, it then said are you sure and tries to force custom again. I used a burned iso.
