There is really no difference between the SB xgamer and the mp3 hardwarewise. Get the MP3 for its Surround Mixer and Digital Audio Center software, unless you want some outdated game bundle.

Sounds like a driver problem. The Athlon Via chipset owners are always advising to get the lates Via 4in1 drivers. Also you may try getting the latest CL driver set.

Without looking up specific model numbers, make sure you get the switch and not a hub. Switches are quite a bit faster than hubs. Linksys is good stuff, you'll be happy with it.

Yes for some reason W98 may report a PIII as a PII during bootup. However that doesn't explain low CPU scores. Try running Sisoft Sandra 2001 cpu benchmark.
