    Hard drive problem?

Hey guys, my friend's computer is acting strange lately so she asked me to see if I can do anything with it. It crashes randomly and seems slow so she formatted the hard drive. The thing is it doesn't seem to even install the OS correctly. When installing Windows 98, it hangs midway through installation. Is this problem easily fixed? If so how? I am considering a low level format, what do you guys think? Thanx.

Before resorting to a reinstall, I probably would've checked the RAM and temperatures first. Failing RAM or high temperatures can cause instability and performance issues like you're describing.

How old is the hard drive?

Check and see if it is failing RAM by viewing the RAM check by the BIOS and see if you get different numbers. It does not sound like it, but if it is bad RAM then you should hear a beeping noise.
