Ive never seen anything like this before

My computer is freaking out. It is homebuilt, running windows XP for over a year now, and last night i turned it off as i went to bed. Today i got home from school, and the monitor is showing garbage as i boot it up. Most of the time it wont boot up fully, and restarts and attempts again, only to fail again. I had not done anything unusual to cause this problem. So i am thinking its hardware failure. The monitor appears to be fine, because when i hit the button on the front to bring up the monitor submenu, it shows up fine. What could be wrong? graphics card, cpu? Sorry for any typos, i am typing this on my messed up computer, and cant really read the text well. Do you think i might have contracted a virus?

Check and make sure the graphics card hasn't become lose and also make sure the fan on it hasn't burned out. If you can swap it for another and see if the problem persists.

When your system runs the POST, does the screen still show garbled text? Or is it only after the OS starts to load?

Also if your chipset has a fan make sure it hasn't died. Mine did and gave same problems as yours.

in response it mrspm2003, yes, whem my system runs the post the screen shows garbled text. I will recheck to make sure no fans have dies, and everything is securely attatched. Also, when it did boot up, it played mp3's just fine, if that helps anything.

It almost sounds like your graphics card went bad. I would recommend trying another video card in that system and see if that fixes the problem. I had similar problems like that and that's what the problem was.

well guys, i figured it out.

It was my graphics card. A Geforce 3 TI-300. Is there anyway to bring it back to life? Or is it upgrade time?
