It would appear that AMD is going to use DDR400 for A64.

I don't know for sure where the roadmap came from, but it tends to make more sense than the HP figures linked here a short time ago.

That speed ramping is WAY too slow, I can tell oyu that much. over a year until we see a 2.4Ghz chip? Intel will RUN AWAY WITH THE WIN with prescott if that's the pace AMD is gonna hold.

I agree i just cant see these as beeing real i mean come on what is AMD thinking when opteron came out they had 2ghz samples that will be 5 months prior to the A64s release they should have atleast gotten to 2.2ghz by then. And the saddest thing is the speed boost they expect they call a 2.4ghz a 4000+ lol. I love AMD but for crying out loud a 2.4ghz barton is about onpar with a 3.2ghz P4 and i gurentee you hammer isnt gaining 800mhz. And when prescott comes out AMD will be gone heck Intel might as well take a years vacation. But then again HP sees it as promising i guess so we can only wait. Maybe these roadmaps are just way off and we will see somethign different once the execs at AMD pull there heads out of their you no wheres.

Sweet you got a hammer, I'm interested to see how it benches it up compared to barton and Tbred, hows the 3dmark scores?

I understand what your saying but from looking at opteron and the 1.6ghz hammer over at xbit it seems they wont be able gain anymore than 400mhz at most. And anyway if im wrong i will be very happy so no need to worry.

And what benefits will 64-bits give to either Windows Longhorn or gaming?

Not being sarcastic, I want to learn

well, in some instances, 64bit code is more efficient than 32bit. Also, 64bit allows addressing more than 4GB of memory.

Applications will need to be rewritten to take advantage of the 64-bit processor.

    Quote from anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1815&p=5):

The benefits of a 64-bit microprocessor architecture are mainly memory related; if you take two identical microprocessors, make one 64-bit and one 32-bit, the advantage of the 64-bit CPU is that it can address much more memory than the 32-bit CPU (2^64 vs. 2^32). For those that were hitting the limits of 32-bit memory addressability (4GB), Intel's only high performance solution was to transition to Itanium, but if all you're looking for is more than 4GB of memory and solid x86 performance, then you're SOL from Intel's perspective.

Well considering a 1.8GHz Opteron trounces a 2.8GHz Xeon you are looking at a 1GHz gap that can easily be covered. Also consider that the A64 is closer to the Opteron than first expected and it will also use faster RAM (most likely). It should do well. After all, I have yet to see anything promising coming from Intel about the Prescott, and they claim it will be out this fall - even though I have recently seen 2Q and 2H 2004.

Whatever the case you need to give the companies more credit. AMD knows what they need and on the other hand Intel knows what they have to beat. It all comes down to how much marketing AMD can get out of the 64 bit 'feature' that they are offering. This I believe will be the true trump card - something that Intel does not offer.

I thought the XP-64 will have a max 1gb of memory capability?
    I could easily be wrong.

I would like to see 64bit a success. Primarily cause we've been using 32bit for so long.

Yes, but that is going to happen very fast!

Remember that we've already seen the transition from 8-bit to 16-bit to 32-bit and in neither of these transitions was there a big delay in software support for the new systems. I remember how fast the transition from 16 to 32 was! Windoze 3.1x was 16 bit. Microsoft released Windoze 95 and almost overnight software and games for Win95 started appearing in stores. Same thing is going to happen when a 64-bit Windoze is released.
