celeron vs P4 ,price over performance

This is a price over performance question I am buying a highend pc I have upgrading from my monitor to 22" new case(thermaktakeIII) keyboard mouse and other peripherls. I plan on a p4c800-e mobo and best dual ddr I can get I think I'm going with corsair 400mhz. now comes the cpu, I planned on buying a cheap cpu untile 2004 and then get a 2.8ghz 800 or higher. So right now pricewatch lists a 2.4g celeron for 90 bucks. what is a 2.4g celeron equivalant to as a p4? like a 1.5ghz p4 or 1.7g? thanks guys my cpu now is 900mhz amd

Yeah, that's probably how the Celeron compares to the P4. It has no L2 cache, so it's a basically a crippled processor.

The Celeron has 128K L2 cache and at 2.4ghz is about equal to a P4 1.6A in most apps

Celerons are great for doing some word processing and surfing the net. If you're going to play games, do anyhting that has to do with video editing, or graphics editing, the Celeron is not for you. Buy a 2.4C for $180 and overclock it to 3.0 or so. You won't be sorry if you speend the extra money on your processor.

    Don't buy celerons.
If you are looking for a good price performence then buy Athlon XP.
The 2400+ & 2500+ are real cheap and much better then 2.4Ghz celeron.

    Thumbs down

Never, Ever buy a Celeron for any reason...Just say no.

With the kickass 2500+ Barton available for 90 bucks? Why would you even consider it? The 2500+ Barton will absolutely slaughter that 2.4 celery...

Just get one,(Barton) you'll be glad you did...

Why!?!?! You've bought yourself some real kick-a$$ gear and you're going to castrate it with a low power CPU!! That makes no sense. And why would you only be looking at a 2.8ghz in 2004? Right now you can get 3.2ghz by the time you come to buying a CPU there will be 4ghz+ CPUs out there!

    Thanks for all the post.

WOW talk about your anti-celeronhehe. Well as I said above my goal was to buy the cheapest cpu I can get then around the new year I would expect the 3.2g chip to be under 300?. right now it's like 600?...that is why I would get cheap now and save big for later5 months or so.

And I think we should be only expecting a 3.6ghz chip that will fit the mobo I am getting now in frist quarter of 04. And I would imagine after that a 4.0ghz chip and they migght just call it P5.

We will see what happens I don't plan on order for another week or 2.

And I will be buying a barton 2500 for 90 bucks retail along with the top asus mobo for it. But it's for my bros box. The computer I have now is going to my wife. And I need to go pickup my new pc desk.So u can see where most of the money is going. And I am buying my bros computer 2.

If you want Intel at least get a 2.4C. They are about $170 right now and OC very well (more than 3.2Ghz quite often). You would be better off with a 1.4Ghz PIII than a Celeron

Man, v8villain is right, anti-celeron atmosphere is around....

Got my celeron 2.0ghz awhile ago, now can get it for $100 canadian (about $65 US). overclocked it to 533fsb at 2.66ghz with stock cooling and voltage no problem. ( i couldnt afford a 2.4ghz P4 which was my second choise if I had the money...). CELERONS ARE GREAT FOR LOW COST YET FAST PERFORMANCE. my cpu is about as fast as a p4 2.6 ghz in basic tasks, and about a 1.8/2.0 ghz in gaming, but cost me less than a 1.5 at the time.
    My main rig:
    Celeron 2.0GHz @ 2.66, 533 FSB and stock cooling
    ECS P4S5A DX+
    512MB PC2100 Ram
    40GB Maxtor 5,400RPM HDD
    48x24x48 LG CD-RW
    16x48 LG DVD-ROM
    SB Audigy
    Sapphire Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb
    MSI TV@nywhere TV Tuner

He is planning on going with an Intel setup...AKA the Dark Side.
Why not just buy Thunderbird1Ghz's Celeron setup?
