Exclamation WCIII RoC, Chap. 8 - HELP!

I'm in WCIII-Reign of Chaos, Chapter 8: "Under The Burning Sky". I can't get past the last 30 seconds or so of protecting Kel'Thuzad. He's at Level 8 and Arthas is Level 9. I keep getting killed too often and losing levels.

No matter how much I mass Frost Worms, Abominations, Crypt Fiends, etc. I still get swamped and can't hold 'em off for that last 20-30 seconds. I try to build up as many Ziggerats as I can to protect my base, but then I can't get in enough gold to build other forces in time. I use Arthas' healing ability on Kel'Thuzad for awhile to keep him alive, but then Arthas ends up getting fragged. There's too many of them!

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!

    - Use goblin land mines. Take a shade and explore the area to find bottlenecks and lay three goblin mines in one sitting. It'll help you fend off attacks.

    - Never stop building units. Go for the units that can be built faster. Forget about the frost wyrms. Build two of each building.

    - When the final push comes, pull back all your troops towars Kel'Thuzad and clog the entry way with them. They'll die, but it'll buy you some time. Usually 30 seconds' worth.

    - Ziggurauts are like the goggles: They do nothing. Use balanced units to fight off the advancing waves. Instead of stationary fortifications, use varied units separated into 2-3 death squads.

    - Oh yeah. Keep Arthas alive, and have him cast his death coil to heal Kel'Thuzad as he takes damage.

    Thanks for the ideas.

I've used the goblin mines, usually I place them at the entrance to the altar where Kel'Thuzad is, and between the trees where they enter near the base. They get used up fairly quickly as soon as there's an attack or two, so I don't know if they'd do any more damage further out on the footpaths.

I'm constantly making more units - resources permitting. In fact, I'm often waiting for more gold to come in before I can make more.

Using lighter/cheaper units like Ghouls, Gargoyles, Necros, and Banshees seems Ok, but they get killed faster too. I'll try it again. I try to use Necros alot, because they auto-raise Skeletons. I thought the Frost Worms would do well against both air and land units. They do, but they cost alot and take too long to produce, I guess.

I haven't often made 2 or more of the same building in this level, because my resource supply doesn't keep up with what I try to produce anyway. But maybe it will if I don't build too many Zigs. Also, you can only have so many troops at once because of the 90 food limit. Building Zigs doesn't count into that.

I usually keep a good sized force near the main base, one near the gold mine in the far corner, and one around Kel'Thuzad. And I'm always running back to the altar to zap him with the death coil.

But, you've suggested a few things I could try out. Hopefully, I'll be able to kick some butt with different tactics!

    Thx!

You try Abominations with casters (both necro and a few banshees) and a few fiends? You said separately but together?

Yup. Tried just about everything. Guess I just have to get a lucky combination at some point.

Well I was almost done with a really long response here and then the power went off so Ill try to make this one shorter.

I really think this level is one of the hardest in the game. But this is how I beat it if it gives you any ideas.

-Center: I built about 5 or 6 zigs with enough space behind them to move units. I left most of my army behind these zigs when the final attack came and I left one acolyte here with auto repair on.

-Left: I think I only built one or two zigs here because I planned on using the base to slow them down. I sent some fiends and necros over here and had them delay the right group. I also had a few zigs in my base that slowed them down for a while.

-Right: I built a wall of about 6 zigs. When they came to attack that spot I sent troops from the middle to distract them and try to pull them up to the middle. I forget if they had mortar teams but for some reason I think they did? I would go for those first. I also left an acolyte behind the zigs with auto repair on.

When the big attack came, the army on the left kept them stalled enough that they didnt break through the two zigs until time was up. The center held pretty well but by the last few seconds it got pushed back as well. The right flank of zigs got hit the worst because I didnt have an army over there and by the end they got the farthest in. I made sure to pull back when I could and save my guys for meat in those chokepoints. When time ran out, I had Arthas, the felhounds (I forget what they are called in RoC...) and just a few random units that survived. It took a lot of microing though. I dont know if it helped or not, but at one point when no one was attacking I hit their base and killed some stuff and ran away after I lost a unit. And while the zigs wont win the game for you at all, they should buy you time (which is all you need).

It's been a while since I played that level but that's how I remember it. Good luck in finding the right combo.

I didn't know there was auto-repair, I'll definitely use that for Zigs & buildings now. I'm sure that would help a lott.

I was thinking of trying some Stone Gargoyles to distract the attackers out by the entrances to the altar. They can't shoot back, but they take alot of damage and might hold them off for long enough.

Thanks for the other suggestions - I'll give 'em a try.

    Arrow

I used 3 or 4 Zigs at the altar exits with an Accolite on auto-repair for each group. Then I used Fiends, Necros, and Banshees placed behind the Zigs on the stairs. The only other fighters I had were the free Infernos and Hell Hounds. After they died, things got sh*tty...

Meanwhile, I tried to keep 4 to 6 Zigs built "north" of the base to keep production going there, and of course a few Fiends, Abom's and Necros protecting the Gold Mine in the lower right corner.

When the attack en masse came, I tried to get the group at the Gold Mine to the altar ASAP, and tried to keep Arthas from getting hit by running around Kel'Thuzad's area, zapping him and the enemy when needed with the Death Coil.

Just as I thought I was toast again, the last second ran out!!! Epic it was!
