Exclamation This one's got me stumped!

    Gentlemen,

This evening I was asked by an incredibly beautiful and sophisticated lady in my office to take a look at her new laptop which refuses to work with her DSL connection.

Being the galant knight I am I went home to her to see if I could help.

Turns out she bought some POS Compaq Presario laptop.

Sys logs on to the internet just fine.

Approx one minute after logging on XP gives a message which reads something like "System need to shut down... initiated by Remote connection blah blah" Can't remember exactly. After that the sys will reboot in 60 secs.

There's no indication of a driver issue . Everything looks just fine when I check the NIC.

Tried another DSL modem. No change.
Tried another laptop. Works just fine.

What could be problem? Any help would be very appreciated!
And would probably lead to another free dinner with the Gorgeous miss Sophie.

    /K.

your attractive lady coworker has the msblaster worm.

    Microsoft speaks on the matter

There should be a link to the appropriate patch on their, as well as a method to remove it.

Who would have thought that getting a virus could be a good thing? The wheels of chaos theory are in motion... looks like someone's gonna get a date.

    Thanks a lot guys!

I feel rather embarrased that I didn't think of this myself...but OTOH her system is brand new so I thought the chance of getting a virus would be slim.....

    Thanks again!

/K. (Who's got some excitin' times ahead )

You can never tell about getting a virus.
    Always practice safe computing.
Load and use virus protection software.

And BTW, I've had a custom Compaq Presario laptop for 3 years and love it. Compaq makes good servers too. Their desktops are another story.

Computing? Is that what they're calling it these days?

If she had that system on your network, then you need to be sure that all of your systems were patched.
