    KT400 + 9800 pro = distaster?

I have a Gigabyte KT400 motherboard (Gigabyte GA-7VAXP). On the box it says it supports AGPx8 and DDR400. Now I got a Gigebyte Radeon 9800 pro 128MB.

Here's the problem. Fast Write and AGPx8 won't work! It's stuck on Fast Write off and AGPx4! WHAT'S GOING ON?! I checked BIOS and toyed around, reinstalled a bunch of stuff, etc.

Does anybody have any info on this? Is this a common problem?

I have a similar setup, and Ive noticed my AGP setting has migrated between the two (4x-8x) a couple of times. Currently it's set itself at 8x. My fastwrite stays off also, but I've read that it's best to leave it that way. I'm curious about this too, hopefully the big guns will post.

First of all the KT400 sucks and was a mistake because the NForce2 is much better... But you may not have known that at the time you bought it which is cool.

You wont get any performance increase between 4x and 8x so why does it matter?!?

Actually this is my friend's computer. I got an nForce2 with fast writes and x8 AGP and games run 30 frames better.

I mean, the box and manual actually says it's for x8!

First of all this post sucks and is a mistake and the author needs to grow up and contribute to the knowledge pool instead of bash something he probably knows nothing about.

To answer the question, if you have the pro version of the 9800, was there a sticker over the first 1/3 of the agp slot on the board? And if there was, did you remove it? Also, do you have Hydrovision loaded on your computer? It came with the ATi drivers most likely. When you go to your display settings click on the tab that says "smartgart" and see what the agp and fast write settings are there. You can change them and then you'll be asked to reboot. You said you have checked your bios to make sure that fast write and 8X are enabled. When you go back into your bios are they changed back? If so, check for a jumper that protects your bios from being changed or written to.
    Good luck!

Yeah, i'm talkign about smartgart. When i change it it just goes back to 4xAGP/noFW after reboot. And No, hydravision isn't loaded. There was no sticker. I downloaded the latest ATi drivers.
