Question Need to get rid of messenger for XP

Is there a program that will get rid of MSN Messenger on XP? I hate the way it keeps opening ports on my firewall config and how it's always in the system tray! It's acting more like a Trojan horse than an instant messaging program!

Remember - it's YOUR computer, not Microsoft's. Change the security permissions on the folder then rename it.

if you have service pack 1 installed, it's REALLY easy.

go to control panel ---> add/remove programs ---> add/remove windows components

MS messenger should be there and just uncheck the box

You may have to take ownership of the folder before you rename it / change the permissions. This is assuming that your user is in the administrators group in Windows XP - it should be.

I don't know why... but the permissions would not stick after renaming it... anyway, thanks eveyone... I found a way to remove it from the command line (of all places )

On anohter note, Sandra Pro's file system benchmarks are complete and total ********! My ata drive is faster than both my 10,000rpm ultra160 drives on a 64bit 66mhz controller. Sandra, stay off the crack babe!

There are a few ways to completely uninstall it, but it's probably easiest to just disable it if you're running Windows XP Professional.

    HOW TO DISABLE MSN MESSENGER:
(As far as I know, XP Home doesn't support Group Policies, so this only works on Pro.)

    1) Click Start, then Run, type GPEDIT.MSC and click OK.

    2) Browse to the following key in the Group Policy Editor:
    Code:
    Local Computer Policy
      Computer Configuration
        Administrative Templates
          Windows Components
            Windows Messenger

Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run
Do not automatically start Windows Messenger initially
    3) Change the "Do not allow" setting to Enabled if you want to keep Messenger from running at all. Or change the "Do not automatically start" setting to Enabled if you want to allow Messenger to run, but don't want it to automatically start up.

HOW TO REMOVE MSN MESSENGER (method 1):

With either version of Windows XP, you can use Add/Remove Programs:

Find SYSOC.INF in your Windows directory and open it with Notepad. (If you installed Windows it its default location, you'll find the file at C:\WINDOWS\INF\SYSOC.INF.)

Under the [components] section, find the line that refers to msmsgs and edit it to remove the word hide, like so:

    Code:
    Before: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
    After: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Save and exit from Notepad, being sure to leave those commas in place!

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Now that you've removed the "hide" reference, MSN Messenger should show up under Windows Components, and you can delete it from there.

HOW TO REMOVE MSN MESSENGER (method 2):

Click Start, then Run, type/paste the following command, click OK, and reboot:

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

(I haven't personally tried this method, but it seems to have worked for others on this forum.)
