    K6-2 vs PIII

My sister needs a new computer, and I might get a nice cheap P3 Coppermine from a friend. I know there would be a big difference between a K6-2 500MHz and a PIII 1000MHz, but how noticable would it be to a non-intensive user?
    Currently using:
    Gigabyte nForce 570
    Phenom 940 II 3.0GHz
    4GB DDR2
    Geforce 8800GT
    Audigy

    To Do List:

Is anyone here not an intensive user? That K6-2 would feel slower than a PII-300 to me. Yes there would be a very noticable difference.

I agree; from a K6-2-500 to PIII-1000 should be fairly noticeable.

Get a Duron or an old T-Bird. I bought a 1.1GHz T-bird a few months back for $29, add that to a $35 or so motherboard, with 256MB PC133 RAM and you should be good. Your HDD would then become the most expensive component, and could actually cost more than the entire system.

Odds are these K6-2s and PIIIs are going to cost just as much or more than a T-Bird or Duron.

This guy's right. Get a Duron 1.3 and a modern mobo. That way, you can build the cheap system now, and upgrade the CPU once the Bartons are in the bargain bin once the Athlon64 has become the norm. Going from a Duron 1.3 to an XP3000+ OR XP3200+ one day WILL feel like night and day in most games, and you'll only have to upgrade the cpu if you get a modern mobo and the right ram now. Forget buying either a K6-2 or a PIII if you're buying new equipment.

The K6/2 should now be reserved for displays only of old computer technologies, IMO.

Like everyone has mentioned, a Duron or lower T-Bird would probably be your best bet. How much are you looking to spend? What do you have to upgrade?

I don't have a spare Socket A mobo lying around. I'm selling a motherboard to friend, and he's offering his Socket 370 mobo and PIII 1GHz as part of the deal. I already have a decent Hard Drive and RAM, so it would cost me very little to do this.

And, like I said, this is for my younger sister. Although the K6-2 gets the job done, she sometimes complains how crappy it is . I do realize that it wouldn't be very upgradeable, but it'll work for quite some time I'm sure.

The origional plan was to give my sister my Dad's T-bird, he'd get my Pally and mobo, and I'd have my Barton and new mobo. The problem with that is I would also need new memory. And my Dad wanted me to do this as cheaply as possible.

BTW, is the Epox 8RDA3+ any better than the 8RDA+ other than SATA, official 400MHz FSB support, and RAID?

Like everybody said the K6-2 would be crawling slow. I would either get that P-3 1Ghz or a cheap KT400 mobo and a Duron and yeah, once the XP3000+ prices drop to below $100 in a year or so upgrade it

HUGE difference. I remember the K6-2 was slower than the Celeron with 128kb of L2 cache. (assuming both at the same speed -mhz-).

It depends on what you are doing. For basic web browsing and word processing there isn't going to be much difference at all between the two. Load times may be a little longer on the K6-2 but once you are in the application you are unlikely to notice a difference.

For games, or processor intensive applications like PhotoShop, or video encoding/editing you will notice a difference. There could be some stuttering in DVD (or other video) playback as well.

the PIII 1.0 is plenty of speed for anything but recent games. It's a monster compared to the K6-2 that she's got now.

She should be able to notice the difference in a heartbeat.

With our 3500 down and 350 up cable our k-6-2 550's are fast enough for the web! My old P-3 1000 mhz is WAY faster in EVERYTHING! But on the web (just browsing) theres not much difference!
When defraging, it takes the K6 2's 3 times longer with smaller HDs!!!

All around the P-111 DESTROYS the k-6 2's!!!

He He! I'm on one of the k-6 2's right now! Don't want her to get "RUSTY"!!! LOL!

The K6-2's stacked up pretty well to Pentium II's if you didn't need floating point performance (like games). But a 1 GHz P-III would be a VERY noticeable upgrade from a K6-2, even for a non-savvy user.
