So yeah, the new PSX thingamabob is on the market.

MAKUHARI, Japan (Reuters) - Sony Corp (news - web sites) (6758.T) said on Tuesday it would launch the "PSX" -- an entertainment system boasting a satellite TV tuner and DVD recorder plus its PlayStation 2 (news - web sites) game player -- in Japan later this year at a minimum price of 79,800 yen ($719).

It hopes the all-in-one entertainment system, which also has a hard disk drive (HDD) recorder, will boost its electronics division, whose aging product line-up and high costs were a big factor behind a net loss of almost $1 billion in the January-March quarter.

as crazy as this sounds i think its worth the money becase it can do so much more that it is no longer a console its now a multi functional electronic device.

I think it was better when consoles were consoles and PCs did everything else.

Personally, I think that its a good deal. Right now dvd burners are like what.. $500 for a decent one... plus a ps2 which retails for like $180, so that's $680, plus a tuner, sleek looks and also the whole "hard drive" thing-a-ma-bob.

Itd probably be worth it if you were in the parket for all of that stuff..

DVD player, Tivo machine, PS2 game console sounds like a bargain and fewer black boxes around my TV. too bad no HD support yet...

That's way too expensive. How do they expect to sell this seeing that the Japanese economy is at a slump. Nobody can afford this.

I got an 8x DVD burner for $200.

The PSX is a waste of money.

It's a freaking PS2 with a DVD recorder and a big hard drive attached, nothing new. It can't play any new games or do anything your computer can't already.

You can buy a 160gb 7200rpm IDE hard drive for around 140usd, 4x DVD-R for about 140usd or 8x for around 200usd. Etc, etc.

They are just trying to milk the idiots zZzZzZzZ

I don't think that's really worth it either. That's a lot of dough for a little gaming console that does all kinds of weird stuff.

It's not necessarily a bad price. It's just that it's not very likely that there will be large market of people that need all of the features that thing has.

What good exactly does a japanese satellite tuner do us?

We'd need a model with a DISH tuner and a model with a DirecTV tuner (and then there are still those guys with NASA size dishes in their backyards
