Accessing file on a 2k box from linux over network
I have a two computer network, using a crossover cable, set up as follows:
Linux Machine ---- Windows2k (sharing connection) ==== |The Internet|
How would i set about accessing files on the windows machine over the network, i currently have Red Hat 9.1 and Slackware 9 installed on the linux machine.
Any help appreciated

You can use FTP or Samba. FTP is easier to install and setup.

how secure would ftp be on the gateway machine??
would there be a way to make sure that only computers on the network can access it??

You stated that you only have 2 computers on your network connected via crossover cable. Are you saying you want computers on the Internet to access the files? If that is the case FTP is your only real option.

if your on the linux box all you ahve to do is setup the samba client. and if your in the xwindow thing you can just use the gui editor...and its under something like network preferences, windows shares. something like that. and just add the work group your in.

You could run the FTP protocol on only the internal machine. Personally, though, I'd use samba on the linux machine.

Just Windows file & print sharing. Samba allows *nix boxes to use SMB file & print sharing, which is Windows' native format.

I'm usually too lazy to set up shares on the windows box, so I end up mounting windows administrative shares (c$, etc.) to get what I need.
