    msi or asus?

i'm ready to upgrade my computer and am leaning toward the pentium 4 2.4C 800mhz cpu over the amd xp-2800. i'm trying to decide which is the better board between the msi 865PE NEO2 F1S2R or the asus P4P800 deluxe. i read more about the asus and high end gamers choosing the asus, but i also read great reviews on the msi board in tom's hardware guide.

i'm not a overclocker, although i will set the board (if i get the msi) to turbo. i do mostly gaming and regular computer spreadsheets and utility programs. price isn't that much of a concern and neither is extreme overclocking. i'm just trying to buy the fastest, most reliable system for my dollar.

any help would sure be appreciated - e-mail: yukon2k@adelphia.net

From reviews I read MSI is a bit faster. If money is not an issue then I would recommend going with an Asus. I always have trusted asus motherboards more that MSI. If all fails and you cant decide just flip a coin.

Asus, Abit, or Gigabyte depending on the features you like and how much money you want to spend. The MSI board is a good board, but I would spend my money on Asus.

another vote for asus here, my bro had an msi and we have now dubbed the board multiple serious incidents

but I am an Asus fan so I am biased, but in the hmm last 8 years not one asus product has broken down on me. I am just lucky I guess.

Get the nicer looking MSI board since you aren't overclocking...and save some money too. You're only going to notice a difference when going for a monster overclock.

Never heard of an MSI board catch fire. Do you have a link? These are the types of rumors that people les computer literate read and believe.

hes absolutely right about the fires. go look at the reviews of the 875neo on newegg, there are 2 reviews where the board caught fire. MSI is trash.

Whatever happened to buying a board because of high build quality and outstanding performance?

"Looking nice" seems like a criteria "'the less computer literate" would stand in line for...

    Avoid MSI.

This rumour started when some guy burned his board and didn't like the fact that MSI wouldn't RMA. He then proceeded to post pics on a number of message boards with the same story. The fact is, you could tell from the pics the problem was with something he had plugged into the m/b, and I don't blame MSI for denying the RMA. In any case, if MSI m/b's were 'prone' to burning, they wouldn't be in business very long.

All that being said, if you're looking for an Intel chipset based m/b, then I would go with ASUS. I am a bit less confident with ASUS when it comes to other chipset manufacturers, but with Intel they're hard to beat.

You maybe right, but I think I read where it was a USB device he had plugged in. & that they worked for months before catching fire!
True not true? I don't know, but I do know that in my house with my family one fire or chance of is one too many!!!

Man, this is a hard choice. I'm running an Asus board in my main home machine and the main grunt machine at work. No problems whatsoever.

I used to be an MSI fan. In fact, I still use their K7T Turbo2 boards for budget builds just because I still have SDRAM lying around.

Have also used their KT266 Pro2 and the KT3 Ultra for builds. All of these boards are still going strong. All of these boards were, and are, easy to set up and are extremely stable.

But, based on my experience with the Asus boards, I can say that they are rock solid stable as well.

I think the fire issue is a fluke. MSI boards are known for their stability.

In this situation, I think it all comes down to personal preference as far as ease of setup, looks and features.

I have owned many MSI boards, and I too think that the fire incidents were flukes...I mean I had an Abit mobo in the past catch fire so it can happen to anything. I think it all boils down to bad luck and user error. Anyhow on the note at hand, I would probably go with ASUS just because I like their features more. If the ASUS board is alot more than the MSI then maybe look into that option more, however if you only save 10-15 bucks going with ASUS, I would choose them.
