What's the main reason for using an FTP client program?

I'm learning about them so I was wondering. My guess would be for web sight maintenance, being able to upload and download multiple files simultaneously.

that would be my guess also as to what people use ftp's for. my next guess would end up being (not to go agains the rules, just saying its probobly true) that warez would be the next common use of ftp programs. that or shareing files between home networks, if they dont want to set it up another way.
    WHy...why...

Other than what Muk108 said, it's been my experience that whatever you might be downloading, it goes a whole lot faster via ftp than via http. Although come to think of it, maybe I was just downloading smaller files or programs via ftp and never noticed that. :\

Apart from transferring large files; legal or not, it's useful for queueing a lot of files like linux distros

FTP is great for just about any transferring needs.

FTP = File Transfer Protocol so to sum it up it used to transfer files over networks
If your sig is longer than your post then type more.

FTP unlike http is easy to script. I use FTP for prescheduled, unattended file transfers.
